I think the second part of season 3 is where it goes from being a really, really good show, to one of the best shows. And then, looking back on the first 2.5 seasons, you can appreciate them much more for the role they play in the overall story.

I know ppl have been a little hard on you guys but it’s totally understandable the way the story is told is a big mystery but just know everything will get answered I’m looking forward to know what you guys think once you all caught up . Ilse's Notebook and the other OVAs are cannon. My understanding is that they were broken off because they don't really fit anywhere in the main storyline, and aren't game-changing enough to make room for . I never even watched the OVAs until very recently, and while they do clarify a few minor things and help round out a few characters, , in the grand scheme of things they don't really give you any plot information that you aren't going to get from the series proper.

Ymir's name is never mentioned in the first season, but both Christa and Ymir are present and doing stuff. Ymir and Christa are with Conny when he finds Armin post-Eren getting monched (Ymir makes a comment about how it sucks that Armin survived and Eren didn't and Christa chastises her). Christa also is the one who brings Sasha water and food after she has to run laps on the first day of training (Ymir is also with her there). Christa brings the horse to the Reiner/Jean/Armin team after they meet the female titan. Those are some of the moments where Ymir and Christa are important to a scene, but they are always around.

She was unnamed at that point, but we saw Ymir a few times in the first season. The first time was after Sasha spent her punishment for eating the potato during the induction, and Christa brought her some food. Ymir mocked Christa for being nice. The second time was in Ep 6. Connie is talking to Armin, asking where the rest of his squad was. Ymir appeared and said they all died, except for useless Armin. Christa appeared and tried to calm the situation down, and Ymir said they should get married.
