Sweatin’ to the Oldies was a favorite of mine as a child! Richard was such a rare fantastical queer energy to have around then - I was instantly transfixed! A great workout leader too! That energy level is tedious to maintain unless you are LIVING it, and damn was he LIVING!!

Whenever I think of Richard Simmons I think of his guest spot on Whose Line is it Anyway? No one could hold it together, and he definitely leaned into the raunchiness, but in a wink wink nudge way. My sisters and I cried laughing watching it as kids and I think it lives on YouTube?

A teenage Richard Simmons is a featured extra in the background of the Fellini movie “Satyricon”. Also, I know you spoke of your disinterest in the podcast, but Richard was NOT A-Sexual. And according to everyone who attended Slimmons, he was actually hyper-sexual during the classes.

I love my copy of his 1999 autobiography, Still Hungry- After All These Years. It's full of stories like Rich was describing, including the time he was a guest star on General Hospital. Also, there is a photo of his restaurant Ruffage, where he is standing on a table in a leotard doing shows, while miserable-looking people eat salads. Highly recommended!
