> “Out of curiosity, Brother, why are we steal- recruiting this talented junior?" Oh no, she's a Skaven

Sean Shivers

I do wonder if its mystic directly (the blood of these families is a giant formation)... or indirect (eroding the emporer's earthly legitimacy will help erode the heavenly legitimacy).

Zadumu

It sounds like the "pillars" are important. It sounds like they're going to be running around the kingdom stopping the assassination of the heirs to the pillars.

Zenopath (AEV)

The objective wasn't just to kill the boy, after all the tutor could have done so at any time. It was to kill him in a way that had deep symbolic meaning,; at the shrine in the middle of a massive attack the emperor and monestary failed to prevent. So basically, it was a PR stunt.

Malcolm Haynes

Dual cultivation obviously! 😂

Meredith

Tian is so sweet to Liren!! ><><>< His Brother monks would all be so proud/gossipy about the Junior Brother who sent a letter to a Junior Sister with medicine for her condition!! ><><>< Cuteness overload at the last paragraph

Grant Prater

It's easy for action scenes to feel like they have no stakes, and if it's just a long list of moves back and forth can become monotonous very quickly. Having them advance the plot and feel fresh is quite difficult, especially as the story gets longer. They're often my least favorite part of stories like these, which is a shame, because well-written they can be quite inspiring. I agree I like this montage-style questing, which could have been drawn out for probably less impact for ten times as long.

Joshua Flowers

I wonder what would help Lirens pent up vital engergy to make a breakthrough

Johan Persson

It's in italics, which means it's his thoughts. His actual response to Liren is the part that starts with: "Tian thought for half a moment, then leaned over and whispered in Liren’s ear. "

John Koor

“Out of curiosity, Brother, why are we steal- recruiting this talented junior?” “Good question. Grandpa, why ARE we stealing this kid?” Does Liren know about Grandpa, if he's openly asking Grandpa things in front of her?

Abhi

You know, all this makes me wonder if the Heretics are targeting the Monastery particularly or if they have similar stuff going on in all the kingdoms of the Sects fighting them now.

Tadas

I think body dysphoria is more likely cause. She has said that she thinks she looks weird, uses veil and gloves. Her cultivation seem to add to tall, tan, hard look which is opposite of cultural beauty standards.

Ben Nikel

Yeah, but also... that word has a LOT of different translations. I like "integrity (moral)", because then you can read it as "the integrity of the pillar."

Ben Nikel

See, that's the best part of cryptic prophecies. We'll be wondering exactly what it's referring to for a good, long while, until Warby decides to detonate this particular villainous explosive. I think this is a good theory tho <3

Ben Allen

Liren is not supposed to eat the third bun according to the divination cultivator in chapter 1 of this volume. Grandpa referred to this kid as a juicy bun. I wonder if thats a coincidence or if this child is one of the buns the divination cultivator was divining about.

Raymond Mouton

Thanks for the chapter. Interesting one.

Chris Fey

Perfect metaphor for our boy

BaguaBrady

Oh Tian, so well meaning but maybe part of Hong's hang up is you and her confused feelings?

Veridescent

I think by Merit he means De, which is kind of like Fus note of how moving with the Dao is natural and lets one act effortlessely. The kid can see the natural alignments to the Dao. Which....I guess says some things for mortals darn it

Evan

It’s one thing to have a system of merit with point costs in universe. It’s another thing to have it present without spilling all the point values. Seems challenging from a writing perspective. There’s a fine line between having the system and keeping the mystery.

Veridescent

Merit, why does that niggle at my brains language bits. Wait I remember its the De, ok, it all makes sense now. I see the route of complaint, truly the heretics are quite focused on properly being Karens. Now most such cases dont take hostages but hey, if its the ruling sociocultural way to get noticed by management I get it. Helps to kill something more righteous that already aligns with the Dao. I see the Confuscian integrations

Evan

Seeing spiritual merit is a huge game changer. Imagine being able to tell if someone is secretly a rock thrower or not.

Morog T Tiny

Warby as always Thank you for your effort in writing such a great story. I really appreciate you publishing at the same time every week day. Again, great story.

JAMAJ

I don't think he wanted to be caught, but recognized he was found out when Tian attacked him

Boneco

I'm starting to think that this plan of the herectics has being going on for a long time. And that time were Tian saved the girl from the herectic with the demon claw on the border town was part of it I think that maybe the herectic panicked because it was to early to make the sacrifice work

Robert Mullins

The only reward for good work is more work.

JTP

Tian, speaking softly and carrying a big stick!

WickedlyDesigned

If the goal was simply to kill the boy, why the attack? Tutor kidnaps him in the night, kills him the right way at the temple or whatever, and by the time anyone gets alarmed, he's already miles away hiding. Compared to that, this large scale attack is too visible and too dangerous - see how both the tutor and Blackhand are already dead in the current scenario. So what was the point of all this hassle?

Tadas

The kid wears a robe with a carp on it. There is a Chinese tale about carp that swims upstream a waterfall and becomes a dragon. I wonder if this was the kids waterfall.

Steve Wright

Just quietly heartbreaking.

Jeremy Goldberg

“I’m told a mother’s hug  is very reassuring” oooooof

Steve Wright

I may have said it before, but it bears repeating - the pacing of this story is phenomenal. I like a good battle scene as much as the next reader, but I’m glad that we do not spend six chapters fighting a guy in this story. We have some glowing mystery, a fight, a little more mystery, some politics. Things happen, and having happened, move on. Very satisfying.

BaguaBrady

"I'm told a mother's hug is very reassuring" Ahh poor Tian 😥 so much said in that little comment

James Faulkner

Tftc!!

Robert Mullins

I mean, shameless is taking a kid on a 3 month journey so that he can be at your temple instead of letting him stay at the one nextdoor he is already familiar with.

João Vene

Imagine what the parents are thinking, with their little boy getting kidnapped by the immortal benefactor that saved him, while the local inner court guy tries to take him. They're not seeing that kid again for years and years

Alexander Dupree

“…make it someone else’s problem, “ Ah Tian, if only the reward for success wasn’t responsibility for the consequences.

Markus Müller

Cultivators are truly shameless when smelling benefits.

KipBR

Yoink! My cultivator now.
