"When I think about the future, you're in it."

Johan Persson

Hahah I'm also F5ing like crazy, wondering if i've forgotten what day it is.

Robert Mullins

Chapter?

Zenopath (AEV)

So the Saber guy gave the pendant and said it was is a key to some secret technique that was lost when empire was founded, but he never found where to use pendant. Probably that location is where pendant needs to be used somehow.

Meredith

Can someone help me connect the dots on what the ending is about … like what does it mean that that symbol is also in the painting?

Abhi

My guess is they all have shrines similar to this one and when they noticed somehow that the Mandate/Merit was gone from their conferment they skedaddled to the Capital to beg for help or make excuses or what have you.

Felix Giron

"The desert is always with you." Compassion is hard. So proud of Tian. Also, many cheers for complaint planning for the next 2000 + years. No suffering in silence or solitude.

Gardor

"All the other fleeing officials had made their way towards the capital, but none had reached it yet. " ->wait, they say where they're going before "fleeing"? I thought it was more "vanishing in the night", but theyre just like, making up bullshit excuses or taking their vacation time? People know where they are? Or was this supposed to be about the letters the censor was writing not making it to the capital yet? "Tian was rather surprised to see the censor depositing it in an iron bowl, lighting a corner of the package, and carefully ensuring the whole thing burned. "->they...watched him burn a package of letters? Potential evidence? Isnt this guy something of a suspect? "Tian spoke loudly enough for the mortals to hear." -> i think you should reference that theyre talking too softly for mortals to hear before this moment. “You know you have more than enough merits to pay for this mission, don’t you?"-> i have no idea what this means. Pay for what mission? Is this about sending letters, and he could pay for it himself? Why would anyone say that to him? He shows up, flashing an elders token to send some letters, and the clerk checks his merit balance?

Morog T Tiny

Tian talking to Liren about how he is going to complain about this a couple millennium in the future is probably comforting to Liren. She is worried about being left behind.

Morog T Tiny

normally someone in government service would have records, codes, and other documents that would be destroyed when leaving a location if there is no one that could take over responsibility for their management.

Book Worm

“A village was exterminated?!” - the kid (heir) “Hush, little treasure ….” - the mom (countess), speaking to the kid “Ping….quickly” - the mom (countess) turning to speak to one of her guards

BelligerentGnu

“A village was exterminated?!”  “Hush, Little Treasure. The Immortals are investigating. Though… Ping. Quickly. Report to my Lord Husband.” “At once, Madame!” A soldier cupped his hands, bowed, and ran off.  Okay, who the heck is speaking to who here? They started off talking tonrhe censor, then suddenly his wife, then the censor again? What?

Zenopath (AEV)

I was thinking Tian and Liren would have to carry the two mortals, but then I remembered they have a motorboat faster than mortal ships, with Liren as its motor.

Veridescent

Interesting to think on census taking and how the incrntives would shift if cultivators were doing basic education on vital energy and making charms as parts of their studies. There is(though I know the historical reason is often related to the incredible pain of language variation) a notable efficacy gap in household identification here. So many possible improvements that are nominally possible, that would make things easier. Some normalized formations and talismans may even make such things relatively easily independently automated. I am quote curious about what exactly the censor burned and why. As a last point it feels quite fair to observe the affiliation Tian gives to mortal vs immortal air is in truth observing something far more permeable. Even if mortals roots are away, its notable how much of this interelates to nominally evem higher cultivator dynamics in the heavenly level.

Macronomicon

When Grampa was telling him it was a good thing he made the right choice, and Tian asked why, the FIRST thing i thought Grampa was gonna say was 'hapy wife, happy life'. To my disappointment he got all philisophical with it.

Raymond Mouton

Thanks for the chapter.

Andrew Simpson

I absolutely did to, but didn't realize that is who I was thinking of until you put a name to the face in my head.

Brian P.

The inevitable escort quest begins!

Milan Seyed Mahmoud

After reading the description of the censor and his voice, I immediately thought of the advisor from Mulan. Then you named the soldier Ping!

pierre boucheron

In this kind of time period that's basic pattern recognition, the first and fifth years of life were big dying points. The iron cages are not a normal part of the process.

Abhi

Censors probably not evil but just the usual level of sociopathy expected of a politician it looks like. Going off the "Dead kids big whoop. Oh, letter saying my bosses boss is a bad dude? Real shit."

Robert Mullins

Nah, he said they'd talk after leaving but before getting too far from the city.

Robert Mullins

Road trip! Or river trip I suppose. Gotta go find the next clue, drop their newly adopted child off at the temple, and then go meet the emperor. Tian casually implying they're going to spend thousands of years together without thinking anything of it...

David Bailey

Liren's eyes are better than "decent"

Michael

Just started reading this chapter, but where did the end of the last chapter where Tian was confronting Liren go? Is it just me that thought it was a cliffhanger?

JTP

I'm sure it works about as well as demonstrating you can liquify a melon without breaking its skin.

Robert Mullins

Somehow I suspect this isn't working as he intends: `Tian kept his voice as even as he could. Liren could be scary. It helped to have a calm person around for people to talk to.`
