Andrew Simpson

Dr. King has a famous letter written from the Birmingham jail, where he talks about the frustrations of trying to make progress. It has a quote that has always stuck with me, and I feel both Warby and Tian should hear to know they are in good company: "I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"" -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Letters from Birmingham Jail, 16 April 1963 If perfection is the enemy of great, "but" is the enemy of justice.

Trasen56

They have one of the best depicted friendships/found family relationahips I've read in a long while.

Nonnyor Business

I'm not familiar with it. Worth a google? Though as many people have noticed, the empress was closely modeled on Wu Zetian.

Novruz Javadov

Yep, there has been only one Empress is a giveaway

Endgame

Wow. Death by way of drowning in chamber pot refuse is diabolical to the max. Weeks of trying to stay afloat in sht. Just wow.

Drew Tang

"The First Prince was maneuvered by the Second Prince into, perhaps, arguably, forming a conspiracy to depose his father and take the throne. The Second Prince revealed the plot to the Emperor and had the First Prince, and his mother, exiled to the border where they died." Wait a tick - i remember this plot from road to empress lmao, is this Wu Zetian??

Brandon Cleveland

That does make me wonder about the related issue of if there is anyone to look after little treasure in their hometown. Yeah they've claimed him for their temple, but shouldn't everyone be at war now?

SquiddlyWinks

Bless Hong Liren for going along with Tian’s birthday nonsense. What an absolute legend.

Raymond Mouton

Thanks for the chapter. Good one.

Veridescent

The other end of Fial Piety is another 'but' statement. Give obedience but have no insurance of return. It is a good cohesion model, but not one of restoration or remeiation

antpocas

Damn wasn’t expecting a crossover with Northernlion’s playthrough of Road to Empress, that’s crazy

Noah James

10/10 dialog + lore drip

EvilLittleThing

He doesn't have mortal medicine, either. His antidotes would kill the mortals.

EvilLittleThing

I wonder if the assassins were hired by an orthodox sect/cultivator that wanted to stunt Ancient Crane's future by getting rid of their rising stars. Like 5 Elements Courtyard, or that one guy's uncle. Wouldn't THAT be a kick in the nuts?

Meredith

Fuck yeah, Tian. I get that the Censor as a mortal couldn’t see this coming. But still. Fuck yeah, Tian.

Lady Merlin

I really like this chapter overall and feel it's helping to pull a few connective threads together. My only issue with it is that it seems out of character for Tian to not help treat those still fighting the poison as soon as he hears of them. He seems very out of sorts, but seems dutiful in that way in all the other chapters I remember. As always, though, thanks for the chapter - truly appreciate this bright spot in my life.

So the seeds of change are planted. Thank you for the chapter Warby. edit, you plant the seeds and plant the seeds and if the change needs to happen and the seeds are planted on fertile soil then seeds start to grow and change happens. This government official sends off that immortals are engaged in a quiet war that most of the mortals are unaware of but taken, because of the actions of certain mortal leadership, the cause is learned, and a great deal of fertilizer starts to flow down the hill and change happens.

EvilLittleThing

I don't think he's being unfair to the Censor due to how he reacted to village children being burned alive to make ink to petition the Celestial Emperor. The censor throws his whole support behind a system that requires he overlook village children being burned for ink, on the grounds that it's not his job to deal with it. He has no basis to be morally outraged by children who happen to be immortals being sent to deal with a problem that he actively overlooks because it's not HIS problem. Or at least, if he is going to be outraged, he should be outraged by himself and the system that requires he overlook the brutal torture and murder of children.

Johan Persson

Based on what?

Enkelados

Tian is unfair to the completely reasonable censor here, but the anger is completely understandable. It was objectively a terrible idea to send the children to the front.

Zenopath (AEV)

I think the problem is that there are few young cultivators at any given time. Put it this way, Tian and Liren are the only two younglings from thier temple in literal decades. They have never encountered other cultivators their own age, because there are so few of them. When an organization has very few, like less than 1% of a given demographic, it tends to just sort of ignore that demographic and treat them like they treat the 99%. It's just bureaucratic laziness. Why dedicate the energy needed to adress the special needs of a tiny tiny minority? Obviously Im not saying that makes it OK to send kids to war, Im just guessing at the thought process involved. Or more specifically, the lack of thought process. Also the "war unlocks potential to become an heavenly person" mentality doesnt help.

Jae Armstrong

Seems like a... somewhat unflattering riff on Wu Zetian, this. Despite all the invective heaped on her by the chroniclers, she does seem to have been a highly capable ruler.

Joel Magnuson

If you've read his Slum Rat saga you'll know his style will have its up and downs but the story will get a lot darker as he gets older.

Aruj

This volume is getting darker by the chapter... =( Not sure what I expected, but still... =(
