Dropped it in a Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CurseofStrahd/comments/13z4n2p/list_of_alternate_barovian_maps_which_are_needed/

Agreed.. 25x25 is fine for a single use battlemap encounter, it's just generally not big enough for most locations to be fully mapped out. Again, I wasn't putting down any creator. I would never. I'm certain that whoever the creator is/was, they know that their 1990's maps are dated. It's a "shame on Frog God for publishing assets that old like they were new" situation. STILL.. that's been two years ago, so maybe they HAVE been at work updating assets. :) The real point is that Pathfinder is wide open for talented Cartographers. The vast majority of Pathfinder maps still have grids embedded in them, because they didn't listen to me when I told them that VTT platforms have evolved to where they aren't necessary. Heck, MOST of the Paizo maps are still in PDF format! So yeah.. there is a LOT of premium content out there that needs modern maps. From Paizo themselves on down the chain. It's a pity really, because some of Paizo's cartographers made really nice maps. I reworked their Sandpoint map and their Sandpoint Hinterlands map myself (albeit at a smaller scale) just so that there was SOMETHING out there.. but like I said, it's WIDE open for talented cartographers. :) https://imgur.com/a/OP6L84R https://imgur.com/a/OZa8OPp This thread is already pretty long, I don't suppose it would hurt to copy the List of Alternate Barovian Locations below. I'll make sure it's up to date, then paste a copy for you later today, so you have the new version. :)

I speak to Vincent every single day- they've got plenty of ideas they're working with.

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

I've actually found that unless the map has a specific reason to be large, most combat encounters don't use the full space afforded by a map. So, 25x25 should be more than enough for most cases, and where it would not be, I do intend to use larger sizes - 25x25 is intended more as an average for Patrons to expect, rather than a strict rule for every map. I also agree with Heather regarding putting one creator down in order to compliment another - it's not something I'm comfortable with, so I'd prefer if we could avoid that in future. I do appreciate the feedback, though - I'll definitely look into some of the Pathfinder content to see if there are any locations I think I'd enjoy adapting, and I think I still have that list of locations you sent somewhere on my desktop, so I'll take a look for it. There's no guarantee I'll tackle them, but I'll definitely take note of any locations I think I'd enjoy mapping out!

Indeed, I've spoken to him extensively on previous occasions about alternate locations. I have a list, actually.. as I mentioned above. 25x25 is not big enough for most encounters. It's big enough for a small tavern, blacksmith shop, stable or village hut. That's about it, really. The vast majority of role playing scenarios (not to mention locations) require a bit more room to breath. 25x25 is a good size to throw a small party in to a generic battle map with. It's entirely unsuitable for say a cavern, a fortress, a cathedral, a chase,. really, anything EXCEPT a static battle where the characters and bad guys aren't expected to move around at all. Finally, no really. Frog God Games in particular sold a Humble Bundle two years ago that was embarrassing. There wasn't one map in there that I would show to my players. I figured they had modern assets they were offering. NOPE. They were maps from about 1996. Blockish, pixelated, single colored fields.. everything modern artists strive to avoid to create semi-realistic maps. I asked them why in the name of God they even sold a Bundle with assets that old, and they responded that they realized that their assets are dated, but that they are working hard at continuing to improve their products to keep their customers. So.. YEAH.. they literally need help improving their maps. No not finally.. I support and critique every new cartographer that hits the scene that's open to constructive criticism. I've helped quite a number of them improve their trade over the years. Being an artist myself, and understanding how the digital cartography practice works, which leaves me in a unique position to explain things in terms that most of their customers can't. Therefor, I offer my opinions on the subject whenever I see somewhere it might help. Aonbarr is the oldest of the current generation of cartographers, I certainly do want to help him, if possible. As a result, you'll frequently see me leaving lengthy comments on Patreon subs, Reddit or Discord.. where many others remain silent. I would never ever intentionally hurt the feelings of an artist. However, as a fellow artist, I can tell you that if you stagnate, you "die". You must be willing to accept constructive criticism to improve your trade, and you must be willing to learn and grow. That's just how it is. There's no excuse for a company like Frog God to be selling assets that are nearly 30 years old. Learn and Grow.. don't just tell your customers that you are learning and growing while your assets are stuck in a previous generation.

They didn't say they were making more Barovian locations, just that they might revisit some of their older maps that they may update. 25 x 25 is plenty big for most encounters, so it should be fine. Also like, the enthusiasm for Aonbarr is rad because you're right, they're a fantastic cartographer, but it's super not cool to put other people down to make a point. Some cartogs may not be at the same level as Aonbarr, but like, that's okay.

I'm surprised you didn't integrate CSP sooner. MOST artists use it to create their base layer, then import that in to DungeonDraft, then export the layer images from DungeonDraft and polish them up in PhotoSHop/GIMP/Krita. THEN, import them back in to DungeonDraft, and export it with the walls and base lighting. Then import that in to FoundryVTT and add the advanced walls, lighting effects and sounds. So yeah.. consider doing that. Perhaps do one or two sample maps like that to test the process out? On the 25x25 maps.. that sounds REALLY small for a lot.. most.. Barovian areas. That sounds about PERFECT for geomorphic tiles though! You could do generic Barovian forest,, village, mountain, swamp and grassland tiles and etc. Then you could do the above with mixtures of roads, rivers and bridges passing through the different types. That ought to keep you busy for a LONG time at four maps a month. ;) I really wouldn't limit all of your maps to that size though. If it's a production thing, then do four 25x25 sections of a larger map a month. That could make sense.. IF you're careful with the layout phase. Could be a wrench in the cogs if you're not. ;) Yeah.. FoundryVTT.. 120%. Why wouldn't you? I understand that yuo can export compendiums directly out of FoundryVTT now. Instead of DD2VTT files, you can just export compendiums of your complete maps / tiles / map sets. :D -I- would still like to play around in the DD2VTT files, but I'm sure the majority of your customers couldn't care less. If you're going to do FoundryVTT, Baileywiki and Beneos have piles or Youtube instrucitonal videos. Pyram King has OODLES of helpful tip and special use videos for FoundryVTT. I look forward to your Discord.. for some reason I thought you already had one.. ah well. I don't have much use for non-Barovian content. If you like I can share my list of alternate areas with you again, it's grown a bit (not much) since last time. There are a few Saltmarsh. Pyram and Andy are going to switch gears to Saltmarsh soon. Mostly.. I see people shifting and adapting WotC Domains of Dread scenarios and campaigns in to the PF1E or PF2E systems. I would suggest if you lose interest in Saltmarsh to jump over there. ;) I'm not really sure WHY Savage Worlds isn't seeing the same attention as Pathfinder since WotC tried to screw the community in January.. but I expect Savage Worlds interest to increase as well, as it's the natural landing spot for any scenarios that don't fit squarely in the Pathfinder spectrum of play-style. :) As far as your Patreon declining.. that is flat SHOCKING. Hit up the Reddit and Discords more often and get some people coming back in. I know the FoundryVTT community is HUGE.. so shifting to FoundryVTT content might be huge. Maybe open a Ko-fi site as well? A lot of people are mad at Patreon and just left the platform back in January-March. It wouldn't hurt to put all of your content on DriveThruRPG/DMsGuild and the OpenRPG.. OpenGamingStore. YOU are one of the best assets that the RPG community has, and we can't afford to lose you. Perhaps hit up Paizo, or one of their OSR cohorts for commisions? I know Frog God Games and the likes sell map packs that SUCK, hard.. so they could absolutely use some real talent like you have. :D

Keep up the good work
