I am FASCINATED by the positive externalities. Curious about the line between primary and secondary benefits. Like if going to Harvard is the primary benefit, making bank from giving tours is the secondary (btw as someone who gave tours and wasn’t even given a goddamn book store credit by my school, I say YES SISTER Robin Hood those parents!!!). But, for example, would the alumni network be lumped in with the primary benefit of attending Harvard, or would that be a positive externality? Absolutely loving this ep!!

To throw my hat in the ring for fans coming on the show- I graduated from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign with two masters in library information science and Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies. I focused on racism in the library of congress subject headings for my lis degree and for my reees degree I focused on the lived experience of queer people in Moscow and St Petersburg in the 20th century. (I'm also autistic so I've never been casually interested in anything and I have a brain stuffed full of a multitude of pop culture and historical stories)

Regarding “The American way” thing with Tom Hanks, I guess he must refer to Superman’s catchphrase “Truth, Justice and the American Way”. Especially if he was talking about other superheroes in the speech. At least that’s the only place I’ve ever heard somebody say “the American way” before

My dad went to Philips Exeter Academy, then went to UF, then became a preacher (but like, the chill, has a bi daughter kind🤣). and all of my siblings and i rejected even the suggestion that we go to exeter. A couple of my cousins went to Exeter tho, i think they enjoyed it. They’re very hippie-ish, i love them. I think Exeter has a sort of split dynamic of nepo rich kids, and rly smart kids who earned their way in

Loved this episode. My mom was named Eugenia after her father Eugene… and as a college student in the late 90s at a competitive New England small liberal arts school, I can attest to the lack of mental health support. I was the only person I knew who used the counseling center and this was bc of a raging eating disorder I developed while there. No one talked about anything that didn’t look perfect even though alcohol abuse and eating disorders were rampant. They would even deny that sexual assaults had taken place. I spent a lot of my senior year exposing some of these issues and as a therapist now I hope it’s gotten better….
