Loooong time listener, first time commenter: I was thinking about your thoughts on conspiracy theory deterring from its original meaning. I’ve also been thinking about this a lot recently!! I think it is tied to the word theory, people are throwing that word around like it means nothing. Maybe it’s because I’m currently in grad school and spend my days reading actual peer reviewed theories, but they word theory has lost it’s meaning online. Think of the fashion trends, ‘pop of red theory,’ ‘wrong shoe theory,’ and more. Just because a person puts red somewhere you wouldn’t expect red or puts on tennis shoes with a dress doesn’t make it a theory. People are placing the word theory with the word ‘thought’ or ‘idea.’ Like….imagine how much less freaky the situation would be with you and the reporter if people were presenting their silly masked singer, bangs, and BBLs as ideas or thoughts instead. lol I know it’s not that deep, but it is also deep at the same time because understanding the words people are using ties to common societal literacy as a whole.

Genuinely asking- can you not tell the wired reporter that you are no longer willing to be quoted in the article? Like put that into writing so that including you would maybe feel like it could be more trouble than it’s worth? ETA- I don’t think you’re crazy, but given what “conspiracy” now evokes, a rebrand may not be a bad idea. I don’t know about “myth” or “legend,” the government ones are interesting and important to look at (given what has proven to be true). Sad that the Fluently Forward x Sounds Like a Cult collab seems to have been bumpy, but have to agree she has little nuance about real conspiracies or pop psychology. I love her podcast but it’s kinda academic pick me. You’re Wrong About is another pod whose take about human trafficking I highly disagree with - they focus on it only being “abduction” stories & basically debunk it as a hoax despite countless cases of it being true especially in Hollywood???
