I think there are plausible arguments for it being unreliable, potentially damaging and unethical, as well as documented cases of it being straight up deception and slander. However, I still think the families, caregivers, and teachers of nonspeaking people live in the reality of what they’re experiencing. As someone without any experience caring for a nonverbal person, I choose to believe in people who do have those experiences. At the very least, it seems to be their truth.
