Bit late to this one, thanks to life....happening, when Jonathan mentions the trigger guard and maybe he's missed something on the later models - yes, you missed the bit where Dave mentions the EXACT pistol they copied for the M44, namely the Taurus Raging Hunter! Added to that weirdness is that is very open fact that this games are played by People age 12-14 upwards, and I think no one wants to deal with "They marked real Guns to children!" Headlines. Because then People act like age ratings/ recommendations are not a thing.

I think originally Call of Duty's 'legally different' models were phased in due to concerns of the reverse issue to the company suing them. People (parental groups, tabloids etc.) were worried that gun manufacturers who make actual guns for actually killing actual people were marketing their weapons via getting them into video games, or profiting from videogames including their guns, and so Call of Duty in particular tried to make it less connected. Not because the manufacturers would sue them, but because they wanted to make it clear there wasn't any financial relationship between them and arms manufacturers, who are not the most popular companies in the world (which is why it's always been a bit weird with things like the AK, which everyone just about knows the look of anyway, and no-one would assume was on a licence, given licensing the older AK designs is a step beyond what a lot of people who make the real guns bother with).

Would be awesome to see a reaction to Insurgency (2014). It was largely a passion project by an indie development team and a fairly early example of a game trying to have a more realistic depiction of firearms.
