Historical Scanning (Sketchbook 5)
🕑 Added 2023-01-31 14:01:00 +0000 UTCGoing way back in time now for the historical scanning... it's January of 2023, and these are from Sketchbook 5, in 1994. That's almost thirty years ago! And it's a fun sketchbook, awkward but exuberant and full of energy and ink. And lots and lots of taurs. Soooo many Ciracaana (because yes, the Peltedverse setting is this old, and older).
Some things I liked from this week's scans:
- Tie a Yellow Ribbon - I'm dating myself with this reference, but I really like this one. Some noticeable things about this period: I am inking coarsely with very thick exterior lines... and changing pen size to do more delicate lines inside the outlines, and in the backgrounds. The tree with its fancy, busy leaves here is a good example... it sits back nicely from the more boldly, simply inked foreground character. And the 'environment fading into whitespace' was also typical, but well executed here.
- Knitting Ciracaana - Notable for being an old character, and doing something odd. Hands were beyond me back then, but I was paying attention to some details anyway. Her hair is great.
- Rescue - I picked out one of the sketches so you could see what these started out as, and because I really liked the energy of this one. It's all kinds of awkward technically--you can tell I started the picture without planning it because I had to cram the back lower body of the Ciracaana into it, for instance--but the emotion is pretty spot on despite all the problems.
- Cutie Griffin - This was also the era of ENORMOUS EYES. A lot of furry art was pin-uppy, which is probably the impetus for this one, and yet it's more adorable than risque. And the beak/head/cheek/ear arrangement is fairly adept for such a complicated face. Griffins are weird-looking, and no mistake.
Sketchbook 5 is fun for a bunch of reasons, so I'm looking forward to getting to the rest of it.

Wow, these predate my getting into the fandom by a little bit and I've been around for a while.

These are so cute and fluffy! Could even call it classic furry art
