I don't have much more experience with AI than browsing the results on Deviant Art, and I find your account very interesting and impressive. While there are no doubt various legal and ethical questions, AI seems to be just a new tool. Like search engines, or Photoshop and Wacom tablets. Old skills become obsolete, new skills come into play, professions change. Most blacksmiths have been replaced by machine operators (along with a host of other jobs). Where AI generated or AI aided art is concerned, my thinking is like this: If it is equal to "conventional" art in quality and originality, then - regrettably for the creators in the business - the new creation process is replacing the old one. If the AI products are identifiably inferior, then good artists will still be needed to make the good stuff. And now they have new productivity tools. Maybe these will elevate "mediocre" artists, or maybe they will replace them... but there is no stopping progress. As far as the story ideas are concerned, I find it curious that the AI made six suggestions after being asked for and promising four. Number two would probably conflict with the Mayer directive, and number five might require a workaround for energy allowances. The others all sound nice, while number six would interest me most, because it promises anatomical insight. I would love to pick up that kind of world building along the way.

The LLM isn't generating fascinating new ideas, but I'm not sure my ideas are any more original... it's the execution that makes them memorable. (Like that experiment people like to run where they give twenty writers the same idea, and will get back twenty wildly different takes on it.)

All those funny stories sound like they'd be a hoot. The first one seems like it would have the potential for a hilarious "comedy of manners", but I wonder to what degree Pelted cultures are insular enough to have that much cross-cultural misunderstanding. Maybe with Eldritch crew members? RE: Larger questions about LLMs I work in software and educating new programmers, so I end up fielding a lot of questions about LLMs. There are two things I'm always cautious about: 1) An LLM will never tell you if you've asked the wrong question. Humans are great at modeling what the underlying question or motive behind your question might be and getting at the "real" question. LLMs, in contrast, will just blithely answer what you asked. 2) LLMs can't really come up with new ideas, they're just statistical models. It is pretty interesting to me that these ideas do seem somewhat novel ideas. The do seem to be a bit tropey, though - I'm not seeing anything that really surprises me as an idea. Which not to say that they can't serve as the source of inspiration. Like fortune telling or tarot, the "magic" behind it doesn't necessarily need to be real to provide a new perspective . . . but I guess LLMs can also be misused in the same way an unscrupulous fortune teller might abuse a patron.
