Very much the same thoughts here. Magic is Big and Unknown, things keep coming out of left field because Mark wasn't really focusing on the political side so we never really got the full perspective on what could happen. Fate is very much out of its box in this universe and the demons are not helping matters at all. But it really was foreshadowed so well, even if the pacing and focus felt a little off from the HVP stuff

The signs were there man. Foreshadowing was subtle but really you were told in bold letters that there are traitors in Memphi.

Frankly, this just feels like Deus ex diabola - like random things are getting invented to make things worse. It was already bad enough without Kardi being a traitor, and her being an unwitting tool is just narratively unsatisfying. Frankly, I don’t see any satisfying resolution of this clusterfuck without Kardi dying. I’d have included the goblin’s death, but it already escaped and so will once more be an unsatisfying antagonist. Maybe I’ll change my mind when I can read the conclusion, but right now I’m just sorta disappointed.

This makes me wonder how luck powers work. Like, has Kardi been subtly influenced by Demons this entire time to lead to this point? Clearly she lets her power use her as a conduit on occasion.

Reminds me of how I felt during the Chelation War chapters. So much death that our hero is trying to stop and failing, leading to hard choices being made. Amazing chapter.
