I thought it was excellent! The pace of innovation is just enough to satisfy imo, eg the new ship designs, the waterwheels, they feel like a boosted but natural progression of technology

"Siegfried had kicked in every door before they arrived, if he didn't outright steal them" Lines like this are why I give you money lol

Good we won't see Hadi for a while. Any more POV chapters from him and you might very well have your whole readership asking for him to become the protagonist instead. I think having this arc focus more on founding Norland and establishing the shifting geopolitical situation around the Mediterranean was a smart move. It set up future storylines, but it also further developed Seigfried as a leader and most of all a builder (both literally and figuratively). This to me makes his character more dynamic than if he just became some academic know-it-all, but it also keeps him I think truer to himself—curious as he might be about the mysteries of the world, he is always practical first and foremost. Plus, the things I imagine him learning in an academic sense—ethics, statecraft, cultural rather than just military history—won't really amount to much drama until he actually has his kingdom and can start deciding what kind of society he wants to create. Until now he's gotten off easy in this department; Norland was always a distraction more than anything else, and as a mercenary he's been able to pass off moral responsibility to whoever's hiring him so he could focus on the mission at hand. Once he's in charge for real those kinds of decisions are gonna be fully up to him, and it's then that having someone like Alexios or possibly Gyatso around to bounce this more theoretical stuff off of will be most narratively interesting. Looking forward to the rest.

Hehe, Hadi and another Chosen sounds like a fun time. And nothing says Sieg can't make his own university back at home and build from there, especially since intrigue got in the way of learning this arc.

Bravo. You've outdone yourself with this arc.
