Pure Onyx - November Test Release!
🕑 Added 2018-11-21 01:55:33 +0000 UTC Hey everyone!Apologies for being a few days late with this, but here we are with the first $3 tier Pure Onyx test release! Now that we’re getting into complex animations within the engine, we had to get past a couple unexpected days’ worth of headaches – we’re now all squared away for future stuff though.
Here’s the download, but please read through the rest of this post before jumping in! This is an extremely early build, so try to temper your expectations while things develop :D.
Pure Onyx $3 Tier November Release Download
Here’s what to expect from this release:
- A small playable segment
- Colored/detailed artwork for Onyx (but still a work in progress)
- A peak at the animation system in action
- Functioning menus/control configuration
- A good opportunity to provide feedback/requests on anything gameplay related or technical
Just so there are no misconceptions, here are some important features that are *not* in this release:
- The H system
- Quality enemy artwork (we’re much further along with the Splicer artwork, we simply didn’t have time to add it with all the work we had to do on the animation system).
- The only full animation we have in right now is Onyx’s walk cycle. This was to break the ice on getting the animation system up and running within Unity. Over time we will add full animation to the other poses / enemies.
- Approximately large portion of Onyx’s moveset is still in the works. Dash and dash attack/grappling and throws/ and an actual combo system are planned.
- The UI design is completely placeholder while we work on functionality.
- Onyx’s artwork isn’t finalized – there are inconsistencies between frames still, half of which still need to be finished.
- Enemy attacks are currently exactly one frame long – meaning there’s no way to dodge/anticipate. This will obviously improve once we add real animations.
- Lives/Continues/Health recovery pickups and other items/weapons are not implemented yet.
- Character shadows / color grading and sprite lighting / environment effects / etc.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Currently only Windows 7/8/10 are supported. We plan on adding additional platforms if there is a demand.
8 GB of RAM and at least a 2GB graphics card are heavily recommended. If you get poor performance please let us know and post your system specs (or send to eromancergames@gmail.com ); we’re still in the early stages of gauging system requirements.
KNOWN ISSUES
- The first time you walk, the animation will play at the wrong (much slower) speed.
- Characters in close proximity to one another on the Z axis may have the wrong draw order (character may appear behind another even though they should be drawn in front).
- AI sometimes defends forever.
- Hit boxes have not been calibrated at all – they’re pretty goofy right now.
- Player freaks out when brushing up against the far-left wall
- Player sticks to top/bottom walls instead of sliding.
- AI sometimes gets stuck trying to walk into the player
- Splicer walk animation looks pretty ridiculous (so does their current death pose, but that was intentional)
- Player can bypass the landing animation by holding jump while jumpkicking.
- Camera offset on the far left and right walls doesn't account for camera zoom
- Pause menu can be accessed from the Continue screen.
- Some remaining menu input issues -- let us know if you have one and what controller you are using!
CONTROLS
Keyboard:
- Movement = Arrow Keys
- Menu Controls: Confirm = X, Cancel = Z
- Punch = Z
- Kick = X
- Defend = C
- Jump = Space
- Zoom In = Left Shift
- Zoom Out = Left Control
- Escape = Pause Menu
- Quit = F12
Currently Supported Controllers: Xbox 360, Xbox One, Dual Shock 4**
Please note our default mapping for Dual Shock 4 controller may not be correct
** The popular community made DS4 Windows drivers cause Unity to recognize a DualShock controller as an Xbox gamepad, and we can't tell them apart in code. This means that you'll be gifted with the untold joy of having your controller mapped by default with the wrong controls. You can fix it by rebinding the PS4 controller map, or removing the DS4 Windows drivers. (The latter is HARD, a simple uninstall isn't going to be enough)
BUG REPORTS
If you find a bug we haven’t listed in our known issues, please post the following with your description of the bug.
- Operating System (if Windows, tell us 7/8/10, etc.)
- Screenshot if applicable
- Can the bug be reproduced? If so, tell us how!
- OS language if different than English
That’s it for now! We’ll have an Inner Circle update in the next day or two with all of the other progress, including a preview of the first level, fog/lighting effects, and new enemies.
Apologies again for the delay, and as usual thanks for your support and feedback/questions :D.

Nope, just haven't been updating on it since it's been back-end stuff. We're focusing on getting content out for Onyx atm.

Did the original game get tabled entirely? I do not see any manner of update log for Malice and the Machine at all for this last month?

"Approximately large portion of Onyx’s moveset is still in the works. Dash and dash attack/grappling and throws/ and an actual combo system are planned." Sweet sweet sweet :) This game will turn out great :)

So far seems nice and i like the music. I didn't find any other bug except those already known or the "level complete" bug
We should have some H system functionality in December. We'll be starting with basic stuff so that we can get the kinks worked out with the animation system :D.
Thanks for the reports guys :D. Keep 'em coming!
Theres a bug when trying to change your keybindings (keyboard), when i try to it says "ENTER NEW KEY" with big red numbers but nothing happens and i have to exit the game with F12 or close it with alt+F4 in order to fix it. Using Win 10 x64 Also, should we expect the H system this year? I absolutely loved the wrench H-scene you came up with, hope to see more unique ones like that and double/triples as well.
Same here
IF IT CAN BE WORK...

I got the same issue, I am also on Windows 10 and I got about 8gb of ram (playing on a basic toaster comp)

I love it! I can't remember the last time I played a side-scrolling beat 'em up game, but they were some of my favorites in the 16 bit era. Why yes, I am approaching 40. The one bug I encountered that was not mentioned in the "Known Issues" section is that I reached the end of the first stage, and it cut to a black screen that said "Stage Complete - Press Jump to Continue" but I pressed jump many times and nothing happened. Then I pressed everything else, and nothing happened. I assume it crashed, so I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del and End Task just to close the game. I am on Win 10.
