People are won over by Shallan's wit because she's a noble lady and they can't tell her to go fuck herself. A lot of people seem to misunderstand that. Her humor is supposed to be bad.

Nerdy's comment at around 40:30, just chef's kiss

You guys are correct. The book is intentionally slow and confusing. I don’t think any of your feelings aren’t what you’re supposed to be feeling right now. It’s a wild ride but a very enjoyable one when it all clicks.

Shallan rhymes with salon. Jasnah is a soft J, pronounced like a Y.

I totally understand and I like shallan and her character arc. I guess a better way to say what I said is that people in the story act like she isnt cringey half the time. A lot of her cleverness falls flat for me. Some works. All in all not brandon sandersons best showing imo.

i read it as her being 50% witty, 50% giant cringe lord, and people kinda just rolling with it because she's so excited to be funny and it's kind of adorable. Especially in these early chapters where has just spent the past 6 months being encouraged towards it by a bunch of muscular sailors who goes around in vests or bare chested, after having lived an isolated aristocratic life. I mean, she's like 19 by our calendar at this point, and has, as you can probably guess from her letter to Jasnah, barely interacted with people outside her family before this point.

Most things are basically weird crab things in this world.

The J's are pronounced like Y's, so Jasnah is pronounced like "Yas, Queen"

Will be listening tomorrow but seeing all these shallan comments, I'd like to chime in. A common problem people have with the way shallan is written is that she's portrayed as a witty character, every character around her is won over by her wit, but she's not actually witty 🤣

I agree with nerdy about Shallan. this being my second readthrough though I am finding a lot more interest in her.

I thought the way Shallan handled confrontation, how she shut down in the lift in the face of Jasnah's anger might be a clue to her for you. I would watch her more carefully.

Hmmm... I think you guys are both underestimating where this series is going to take you emotionally. I am genuinely scared about what book 5 is going to do to me emotionally. This is also a series where I don't think you can get more than 70-80% of the depth of it the first time through, although I think you'll enjoy the first read, the second is probably better. The first time a lot of it seems like it drags a bit, the second time you understand the connections and what's being set up and what the picture really looks like.

Cradle mentioned 👀 On a serious note I honestly thought nerdy would like Shallan's plot and find Kaladin's plot too misery filled. It's funny to see the opposite. It can be hard to sympathize as much with Shallan when she's right next to Kaladin.

It's fine to not like Shallan, Nerdy just doesn't like female led plots. I mean, that's fine.

I wasn’t expecting it to be out this early. I am excited!
