Obviously it doesn't change how uncomfy it is, but I think you're not supposed to like what Wayne is doing. Wayne is, perhaps unintentionally, doing something very selfish when visiting her.

The Wayne/University bit is a bit of a sour note. I agree that it just doesn't sit quite right. I do think that Sanderson wants you to think there's some downside to Wayne's magical realism approach to life.
