You Hit Me Like The Sky Fell On Me

Toffee was so different from all the other boys their age, so very sweet and attentive and just plain fun- how could Maple be blamed for falling for him?

Excellent theorizing! That's exactly what happened. ;3

you know, coming back to this I had a thought. Maybe one of the reasons Maple was susceptible to Merry was because of rejection from Toffee? May it be explicit or not on his part, I can imagine Maple heartbroken and vulnerable, cut up about the boy she had feelings for not wanting her back and not knowing why and feeling her worth destroyed from it. So when his wealthy and 'charming' father comes to comfort her and gives her the attention she craves, she figures having the original model might be better then nothing. Maybe she saw having Merry as a way of having Toffee in a fucked up way, and made up similarities between them to heal her heart from being unwanted by the boy she actually wanted and over time / when it all comes out she insists to herself and the world that its true love and was meant to be and it was Toffees fault for letting her get away. "Not my fault your DAD knew a good thing when he had it" but deep down Maple, truly where it matters, hadn't gotten over Toffe because she doesn't have the self-respect to realise Merry never truly cared for her, and the marriage and family he gave her was a consolation prize at best. She hasn't thought deep enough on her life to realise that

I think you may be putting a little bit more faith in fundamentalist communities than is deserved. :/ Perhaps they were a little apprehensive, but what could they do, really? To them, Maple's honor was already badly stained as the adulterous harlot that stole Merry away from his wife...so the marriage was a handy means of restoring her good standing in the community and marrying her off to a wealthy and respectable man of god to boot. You better believe they decided to grin and bear it.

Hang on now I'm thinking... Where the hell were MAPLE'S parents??? Surely they didn't just nod along and see absolutely nothing wrong with their daughter marrying a man twice her age without at least Trying to persuade her otherwise.... Right?... Right????

They're such a big messed up family aren't they? π
