A little off topic, but I can envision her dad as a Muscovy duck! The black and white is very orchestral, and they are also one of the more intimidating breeds (while still being silly looking). The caruncle is such a fun facial feature :)

Edit: Nooooo this was supposed to be a response to an earlier comment jfc, all I have to say about this piece is that nothing is funnier than Mal's sexual preference for genuine people. Geniosexual. ___ Oh, bless. I knew Mal's parents weren't big, but like.......look, ducks as a critter have a mixed reputation. Even so, I've seen a lot of people in the homesteading community mention how they can't keep ducks for meat purposes because they're so cute - so I'm very curious to see his design given how his presence affects others. ...Oof. oof. Oof. Just hit me that Mal was never going to get validation that her parents suck. A cute lil duck who is a big wife guy and a sweet and motherly (at least in vibe) swan? Hoooooboy. I figured it was probably the case based on the recent Mal lore, but the more I find out about her parents, the sadder I am for her. I think part of why I get immigrant/Asian parent vibes is that like...it doesn't really *matter* if you don't like your parents. They made you what you are today (successful, hopefully) and your sense of guilt and shame will ensure your dutiful care of them. From my recent personal experience, my dad was the sweet and warm one and my mom was the temperamental perfectionist. I did *not* like my mother growing up, but now...I still don't like her, but we're healing and I think I can have a relationship with her. My dad...well. Being sweet and warm is great, except when it hides a pathological refusal to address problems or do the hard work in a relationship! I hope for Mal's sake that's not the case...buuuuut given some of the tidbits we've gotten....

Mal's father is a duck. :3 Her mother is a swan. They're both famous musicians in their own right. Dad is a composer behind many notorious film and theatre music scores, despite being a legend in his field his name is largely known only to music nerds. His wife is far more famous. She's a celebrity-singer songwriter, famous for her operatic style ballads on love, hope, faith, etc. She and her husband frequently collaborate! Mal's dad is verrrry much in love with his wife. Beyond this, he's quite stern and humorless, a perfectionist that holds himself and others to sky-high expectations. He's got a pretty big temper for a little bird, and has been known for tantrum-like outbursts involving lots of screaming, swearing, and quacking. He is a presence that dominates a room and leaves others unable to relax. Mal's mom, comparatively, is sweet and warm and quite goofy, often honk-laughing at her own jokes. She has her husband wrapped around her feathery finger and she knows it. She's obscenely rich and pretty out of touch with the common person, which leads to her often being innocently insensitive. Still, Mal loves her a lot, and would do anything for her undivided attention. Mal's feelings about her father are more complicated, which sucks because she's a lot more like him than she is her mother.
