the decision to give them happy trails despite being covered in fur is INSPIRED arghaahegrhwgrh (I'm so normal I'm so normal I'm so normal). It's kind of crazy to think of Toffee as being someone w a long and chaotic love life when we see so much of him as a settled and happy adult,,, I'm sure you've answered this already but how would Honey react to finding out about Toffee's earlier lifestyle, especially the hookup aspect of it? It's more that Honey grew up around Merry and absorbed many of his mannerisms. Particularly his way of "just saying what everybody's thinking"- a cruel unexamined thought wrapped up in a nice layer of southern faux sweetness and plausible deniability. Honey says incendiary things because Merry does. She's caught off guard when she wanders outside of her community and people start challenging her on the things she says. She's never been asked to reflect on WHY she thinks the way she does, has never had to consider who and what she's been influenced by, or whether these thoughts are harmful and bigoted. To Honey her thoughts are objectively correct, just like her daddy's. Bob doesn't seem like the kind of man her brother should want, so she says so. She expected him to agree, or at least sheepishly explain himself. Not push back.

The other day i watched sondheim’s company for the first time (read a fanfic that had a character sing being alive at karaoke and got curious) and its a funny coincidence to me that the protagonist is named robert/bob/bobby like your beaver character is. tho tbh. being alive probably resonates more with toffee, since he’s the one who refused to date for so long. committing to bob mustve been a leap for him, huh? Love can be terrifying but incredibly worth it

Thank you! I LOVE drawing food. Back when I was an art teacher (a whole seven months ago, haha), I taught a whole unit on drawing desserts! The kids loved it. Anyway, the key to drawing appealing food is studying real life food and taking in the qualities about it that make one's mouth water. When I eat berries, I look for brightness and plumpness and a shiny exterior, so I try to capture those qualities when I draw them! With bread, you want to show off the texture- in this case I wanted to capture the areas browned from the skillet, and added a little sheen to help the bread look moist and buttery. Form is important and you can exaggerate- I made the bread slices extra thicc, not like the standard sandwich kind you buy from a grocery store. Syrup should look glossy and viscous, but it's also important to remember it has weight, it pools in the center of the bread and spills over the edges. Consider what makes food look enticing in real life, then practice recreating these qualities when you draw food!

Thank you for opening my eyes to how deficient my loved one is as well as how incredibly flawed my own judgement in people and in my own life is. ...Before I settled on vanilla extract, I almost wrote "Bob suggests she juice the lemons herself instead of using the bottled stuff". And I love your idea! Maybe Honey THINKS she's a talented chef, but in reality she's below average. Mostly just inexperienced and too committed to the middling cooking advice she was taught by her mother, who was half-taught the same bland recipes by HER mother. Her lemon bars are one of the few things she can make decently well, so it would rattle her that Bob can see the obvious room for improvement.

Also laughing at the idea that Kathy wasn't much for cooking, so of course Bob picked it up instead to save them from starving but also from Kathy burning the house down. He's not all that fancy or inventive, but the stuff he does make is delicious and comforting. .........Aaaaand your depressing thought of the day: Honey has no idea how to cook because Maple has no idea how to cook. Despite "keeping house" being a "womanly" skill, Maple's never had much of a flair for cooking - unless you count the weird health-food stuff she dabbles in now and then. She disguises a lot of supermarket-bought foods as her own creation...but she did try to bake with Honey as a sort of mom-daughter bonding activity, especially baked goods for the church.

There’s definitely a negative stigma attached to rodents, and predator/prey relationships are generally frowned upon, but in Honey’s case she’s mostly looking down on Bob for being blue-collar and working class. Toffee is a community leader and highly educated, so Honey, through a lens of unexamined classism, views Bob as a step down for Toffee. Also Bob is short and overweight and just not what Honey would imagine the “ideal partner” for her brother would be. Toffee takes great offense to this, to him Bob is more than he ever dreamed of.
