-Balthazar Baast: The self-proclaimed god of rock & roll, Balthazar presently is one of the most famous musicians in the world. He owes his fame immensely to the vicious parental pushback against his albums in the 80s, with good humble pearl-clutching families terrified Bal was a horned agent of the devil, come to bathe in blood by moonlight and give their children frightening ideas about anarchy and gender. A panicked parental movement to ban Balthazar’s brand of heavy metal/hard rock albums had the accidental affect of placing a spotlight on the man, leading to a rapid boom in popularity among the country’s rebellious and frustrated youth. Present day Balthazar is in his late sixties, but despite his arthritic fingers he can still shred a guitar hard enough to wake the dead.
Balthazar is a jacob’s sheep! And a proud trans man. In contrast to his wicked stage presence, Bal is a playful guy in his day to day life, with a soft spot for kids. He is Topher’s personal hero, with Topher owing much of his own punk rock music style to Bal’s influence. Merry hates Balthazar so, so much.
Bal is inspired by a couple irl rockstars, but most notably Ozzy Osborne and Dio~
-Neith: I think I mentioned a couple times that Mal is a biiiiig Lenny Kravitz fan, buuuut that was me being lazy with my worldbuilding. Kravitz doesn’t exist in FB (no irl human does) but that won’t stop me from shoveling a ton of his essence into a furry design. Anyway, meet Neith!
Neith has worked very hard to make a name for herself in the music industry, carving out a genre space with her own claws. She is the patron saint of funk rock, though she’s known to dabble in soul as well. Neith is known for her exquisite vocals, psychedelic rock, love for pyrotechnics in her shows, and proclivity for leather and plunging necklines.
Neith is a jaguar and a butch stud lesbian. Sapphic love is a verrrry common theme in Neith’s music, yet somehow the media keeps dismissing her various lovers as friends or gal pals, so Neith makes a point to tongue-wrestle a lady at almost every performance. This has had a similar effect on the public as Balthazar, with families regularly raging that she be banned, and rebellious young folk routinely flocking to her concerts. Neith informs me that she is not cis, but won’t elaborate further.
Listening to Neith’s music for the first time made Mal experience a rush of foreign emotion so strong that she had fumble to sit down. Besides being obsessed with Neith’s sound, Mal has a huuuuuuge celebrity crush on her, with Neith being perhaps the only creature in existence that can turn unflappable cool cat Mal into a giggly hair-twirling schoolgirl. Mal hopes to meet her in person someday, and perhaps have Neith’s babies- er, get a signed poster.

I love these two so much! This is one of my favourite kinds of worldbuilding, who characters listen to and watch. And you delivered! I’m always a sucker for a sheep character but I absolutely love Neith. Question, you mentioned that Mal’s folks are well known, her mother being a household name. While i doubt either of them run in the same circles, have they met either of these two?

Merry and Balthazar have met actually! Merry capitalized on a wave of satanic panic in the late 90s and rallied terrified parents against the evils of rock & roll. Bal made for an obvious target. Merry's crusade of course fell apart, as all moral panics inevitably do- Balthazar just wasn't especially threatened by an angry little yipping cocker spaniel. Worse yet, all this had the accidental side effect of exposing impressionable teen Topher to one of Balthazar’s concerts- an experience so jaw-droppingly awesome that it completely and irreversibly altered Topher's brain chemistry.

I have a couple of questions, I'm just very curious cuz I think is cool thing you do. I read in the comments that you are a rock fan, Which are your favorite artists? Bands? And maybe If you are open to listing to rock in other languages, maybe you can give a try rock latino/rock latinoamericano? I'm really just talking about my culture cuz I'm always happy to share with music lovers just in case they want to expand their music ear(?) is that the world? I thought I was one of the few that used music and the artist of the music as inspiration for designs and art. And again I think is so cool 😁 Oh do you have certain music styles that aren't your taste but you like certain artist that make that music cuz it's sounds good? For example rock isn't my thing but I like to listen the album of Pink Floyd The Wall, cuz I do this massive video clips/stories of my character and it sounds so epic, the same with certain rock songs, but it sounds good. I would admite I'm really like Halestorm, the voice of the singer is... Wow that lady can sing! I love the roars, screams and passion of her voice, also maaaybe I have a tiny crush on her, but who can blame me? The ladies of rock just have this aura that say "I'm a goddess and you are lucky to be in my presence". The same with rap/hip hop, again not a fan but GOD I looove Megan Thee Stallion and Ashnikko, I'm such a antisocial anxious AroAce yet I swear I feel like the baddest b!tch in the earth when I hear their music, it's so fun and sexy, and I love it😅

GOSH THIS IS SO Relatable! My dad's side of the family is super religious but he got away from it. My dad is a massive horror and rock fan so I have always grown up with both mediums around and given the fact I was born in and still live in a super religious poverty stricken small town in the south, rock music is something I extra clung to (even now I still do since the characters for a game I'm working on are all designed based off different alternative sub genres and groups haha) The pretty rocker ladies where a big part of my gay awakening All in all I'm so glad to know! I have always found your reference to genre in your work so genuine and fun

Fun fact! Balthazar’s design was partly recycled from my first ever concept for Toffee's husband. Back when Toffee was a tiny terrier man, I thought it'd be funny if a little church dog was married to a giant atheist goat that just happened to look like satan. The dynamic ended up looking and feeling too much like Perry & Tibbs, so I set my goat man aside. So glad I got to bring him back as Balthazar!

Yep! A devil figure exists in multiple FB religions, and it's quite common for depictions of him to have non-mammalian features as an easy visual shorthand to convey his unnaturalness. Slit pupils, forked tongue, talons, etc. But the devil also commonly takes the form of a goat, and historians think this may have been done to play to people's fear of the unnatural, turning a prey animal (like a goat) into a cunning predator figure, inverting cultural dynamics in a perverse and blasphemous way. Sucks for goats and sheep, who by proxy get to be associated with evil and witchcraft. There's a ton of superstition in FB, black cats (and aye-ayes like Mimi) are definitely viewed as unlucky.

I am the BIGGEST rock and roll fan. All genres. Rock will always be my favorite kind of music, I cannot overstate how important it was to me growing up in the religious conservative south to have songs all about rebellion and freedom and calling out unjust systems. Watching School of Rock as a kid was my spiritual awakening, no lie! Purple Haze permanently rewired my brain and also made me gay! I worship at the temple of rock and roll! >:O

I love these designs and worldbuilding bits! But it opens up a rabbit hole of questions for me (in a good way, I love thinking about stuff like this!) Conservative whinging about rock and roll aside, (and I know he’s a sheep, not a goat) but are goats ever stigmatized or discriminated against for being seen as satanic by more religious or superstitious folk? (Or whatever the fuzzbutts equivalent of satanism/christianity is?) …Are black cats in this universe seen as “unlucky” by superstitious people as well?

Ohhhhh I LOVE THEM! As a the daughter and a sister of two huge rock fans I must say you got the aesthetic perfectly 🤩 My dad likes more the classic rock, you know AC/DC, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and rock latino. Our rock is like different that the english speakers. And my big brother is metalheads true and true, long hair, big bear, a lot of tattoos, piercings and besides his normal job, he plays in a tribute band, they perform as Slipknot, they are like the official tribute band of Chile. I love how I can even see some of my brother's friends in these characters. I adore the irony of music celebrities that have these cool, chaotic, or always confident personas and in private are... Super chill, silly and such nerds. I get why Mal have such huge crush, the design is this rock queen is so handsome. Also I would never understand how people basically blame artist for being "bad influences" or making not very child friendly art, they as parents should be talking to their kids why it's not a ideal for tiny kids certain things, BUT seeing the history of rock, music is self-expression, and censorship is nevee the answer. Well I grow up catholic and basically every that make you think outside the box or question the system was "the devil" 😅

(My girl who rocks it does so more as a motif, though, and is humanoid, but I have INTENSELY considered designing her a "what if AU" of her as a Jaguar lycan. Both of their designs are killer, and I have a huge soft spot for Jacob's sheep, so Bal's design simply makes my heart sing, though I uh... I gotta admit Neith has me really entranced. I can't resist a hide-the-eyes design. What do Toph and Mal think of each other's taste in idol? Have they ever gone to a concert of the artist the other liked? Also have either of them ever gotten the chance to interact with their idol face to face, maybe for a signing or something?
