Regarding Patreon iOS App Changes
🕑 Added 2024-10-30 01:05:40 +0000 UTCHowdy all. Starting soon, Apple is going to charge their 30% App Store fee on all NEW patreon memberships purchased through the patreon iOS app. THIS CHANGE WILL NOT AFFECT ANY OF MY CURRENT PATRONS. Even if you are currently using the iOS app to access/pay for patreon! Apple is implementing this change only to NEW memberships purchased after November 4th, 2024. I made this post not to alarm, but to keep y’all informed. I’m gonna copy paste from patreon’s FAQ:
Does the Apple App Store fee apply to my current memberships?
A: No. Your existing memberships will not be affected by the Apple fee. If a member subscribed to your page in June 2024, for example, in the Patreon iOS app, their future subscription payments will not incur the App Store fee.
The App Store Fee only applies to new memberships purchased in the Patreon iOS app starting November 4, 2024. Your current members and new members who subscribe on other platforms (e.g. mobile web, desktop web, or Android) can continue to interact with your works in the iOS app.
All this said, I would still strongly encourage any Apple iOS app users to use a web browser to subscribe to your favorite creators instead. Keep in mind, any new membership you buy in-app will cost 30% than it would regularly, and that fee goes straight to Apple, not the creator. Patreon has given us creators the option to either raise our tier prices 43% on the iOS app so the fee doesn’t hurt our income, or just let Apple take a chunk out of each in-app pledge. I’m not gonna raise my prices, but this is a real shitty thing to do to creators and apple users.
To all Android and web browser users (like myself), y’all are fine, this update doesn’t affect you at all~

Yes, Patreon did say Apple was strong-arming them into switching all creators to subscription billing to fit the ios app. Patreon has been a very consistently good platform to use over the years, so I'm inclined to believe them. Still, I'm anxious about how these changes will affect both patrons and artists.

Exactly! Like, it's only fair for patreon to take a cut of creator earnings, and of course the government takes a chunk in taxes, but what is Apple bringing to the table that warrants them getting 30% of every in-app pledge? I've used the ios app and it's trash. The way patreon explained it, a creator would have to raise a $10 tier to $14.50 just to avoid losing income to Apple's leeching. It's so ridiculously greedy! And for what? >:(

In Patreon's defense, they told us all when the news broke a couple months ago that you could bypass the fee by using a web browser. They aren't fans of this either, but Apple is making it happen.

what an incredibly absurd thing for patreon/apple to do considering how easy it is to literally open a browser on the phone and subvert this all together i guess theyre relying on user ignorance??? taking moneys from people who just... dont know??? which is even shittier to the user and the creators

No worries! I wasn't sure if Patreon and Apple were alerting users to the change so I wanted to make a post just to be sure <3 Willing to bet that fee is banking on iphone users not knowing they're gonna be paying more for the exact same experience
