I had that exact show in mind when asking that question! Those poor families. I know we’d all love to see a sliver of that AU if you ever care to doodle it! Poor Topher would probably be completely cut off from his brother in that AU too…. And poor lesbian honey would probably be worse off

Are you asking if kind, sweet Toffee would use his best friend like that with little regard for her feelings? Yes, yes he would've. If things had been different, if Maple hadn't turned to Merry, if Toffee had been pressured more to settle down with a woman...yeah, he probably would've tried dating Maple to combat his wicked latent homosexuality. I've even thought about an AU where he and Maple get married young and conceive a knock-off Honey of their own. It's a terrible ending for them both, their marriage is bursting at the seams with denial and buried resentment. Basically like an episode of that one awful reality TV show "My Husband's Not Gay", where gay mormon men married women and had children and claimed to be happy, but everyone, the wives especially, just look SO damn miserable

Oof. I wonder how she deals with this with Honey - it's been mentioned that Honey disdained her mother for her anxiety/neediness, but I wonder how Maple took it when Honey first came out as a lesbian. She has to confront the fact that her sweet baby girl is...well, either confused or an angry feminist, and I'm sure that stance worked great with Honey. I'm sure Honey yells many things about how lesbians work - Does it ever make Maple think? Even if those are..."bad" thoughts?

Maple does pilates, has a twice a week spin class, and did yoga when she was pregnant with Honey. She later stopped because yoga often entails meditating with one's thoughts, and Maple would rather gnaw off her own arm than be alone with her own feelings of constant anxiety and general unhappiness. So instead she got into running. Bad thoughts can't catch her if she runs fast enough!

Ohhhh Toffee's blushing cuz he's embarrassed here, he's not feeling any romantic feeling for Maple. He feels skinny and a bit emasculated, particularly compared to Maple, who is fit and strong. Toffee is gay. He loves Maple as a friend, but that's it.

Well, here's a fun fact. Maple is fixated on Eleanor, who of course hates Maple and blames her for her divorce. Maple thinks she wants to BE Eleanor, the original church first lady, who is always oh-so poised and elegant and beautiful. In reality, Maple is attracted to Eleanor. A lot. She perceives it as intimidation (Eleanor IS scary) and honest admiration, buuuuut. Well. For a time Maple might’ve had a very innocent fantasy where she and Eleanor would finally become friends, good friends, close friends, so close that they'd run off together and leave Merry behind...

I just saw this lah! Disregard the question about her sexuality. Gah...Lop you have done it again, being relateable via showing religious trauma and growin' up down South. Funnily enough, when I was younger, I messaged you on deviantArt about being a queer, poc, non-religious (closeted enby at the time) and how your work helped me overcome a lot of my internalized homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, casual racism, etc. 12 yr old felt comforted and heard. So please know your work really connects to a lot of people, and ya really inspired my writings/work. Particularly the psychology of characters, I'm a neuroscience major so I took a lot of psych classes. It dawned on me the other day that I remember you had said something AWHILE back on your tumblr about your degree and taking several psych courses. So in another way, really affected not only my growth as a person, but my future, career prospects and artistic endeavors. Thank you Lop!

Just wondering, is Maple closeted and does Toffee fall somewhere else on the spectrum (homoflexible, etc.) or is he just attracted to 'masculinity' or 'masculine' traits/behaviours in the traditional sense. I'm not sure how to quite word this, I was curious since he's blushing and looks rather flustered 😭 Rather awkwardly/uneasily I'll add, I think that's the intention right? Last question: Is this before Maple developed her crush on him or no?

She's not closeted so much as she genuinely doesn't know this about herself. She internalized a loooot of homophobia from her church, particularly the bit where gay men are seen as animalistic degenerates, whereas lesbians are either just confused (just need a good man to show them the way) or angry feminist types trying to rebel for attention. Maple doesn't feel either of these apply to her, therefore she's as a straight as an arrow. Besides, she's got a crush on a boy! A pretty, gentle, somewhat effeminate boy. A non-threatening boy, who Maple at least knows subconsciously will not pursue her sexually or treat her like a piece of meat. For Maple, Toffee is simultaneously a queer crush and an escapist fantasy from the misogynistic world she resides in. If Toffee were a girl, Maple would still have a big stupid crush, she just wouldn't perceive it as a crush. Just a totally platonic obsession about a female friend she invents reasons to touch and dreams about kissing. Normal gal pal stuff.
