Well, ultimately, yes i would. I would have assumed a frontier noble, what is basically the scaffolding of societies, would believe it is their prerogative to ensure their tribe/city/kingdom/nation etc etc... is unassailable. Maybe I just have a very cynical view, but personally, I believe ends ultimately justify the means. Your own family, your people, those you are placed above should all come before an outsider. Obviously, I understand that Ainz wants a hegemony, and that the entire world/super continent would be "his people", but they aren't yet. I believe Liane is correct. It is in the best interest of their people for the Sorceror's Kingdom to be an economic, cultural, education, and military powerhouse in as little time as feasable while they keep growing pains in check. As for merchants being told not to merchant... assassins are good because they murder, a lot. Rangers are good because they traverse difficult terrain, a lot. Ludmilla is strong because she stabs things, a lot. Bards are so good at performing because, Ilishnish is best girl. The ice cream saleswoman who was mentioned way back for item conversion was a better "merchant" than liane, because she sells, a lot. With these things in mind... a merchant grows as a merchant when they sell, a lot. That is my understanding at least

Vladerag

...well I am about to get murdered by Shalltear. It was wonderful knowing all of you, don't bother holding a funeral because I am sure my body will be reused somehow. On the bright side, Ludmilla should enjoy her visit! XD

Luciaron

Ahrg, this is the conversation she needed to to have with liane lol

Aeridinae Lunaris

*Sends Ludmila to Nazarick for hurting Vladerag*

Vladerag

I mean, she isn't entirely wrong. She is basically reinventing Malthusian theories, and Malthus would have seemed prescient until the green revolution and Norman Borlaug. I don't blame Ludmilla for her thinking, but it still hurts me on a deep level. Plus I want her to visit Naz anyway. >.>

Vladerag

Except, you can absolutely trade assets you can't yet exploit. Trading land is a staple of market economies - something Ludmilla, as a noble, won't be familiar with, I know - and merely having it allows you to trade on future value. That is one of the pillars of investing, looking for places with untapped resources that an influx of capital could help develop. And sure, billionaires don't have perfect liquidity, but that doesn't make their assets valueless, it makes them difficult to trade. However, this is no reason that they can't be essentially bartered, it just isn't efficient. All of this is besides the point - I do not blame Ludmilla for her thoughts. In fact, her thoughts are on par with a lot of thinking just a couple hundred years ago. She is essentially reinventing Malthusian theory on her own. I just wish she could have a discussion with Ainz about it... >.<

ovrsurge

Most billionaires don't actually have access to that wealth to just spend as they wish. When they act like they do it has negative consequences on their business like Elon Musk having to sell stock in his companies to pay for Twitter. That being said you are right that Ludmilla has no frame of reference for naturally balancing market forces. She sees things as an exponential curve when in reality it is following a logistics curve. People are only willing to put up with a certain population density, Families struggle to form when economic conditions don't allow it etc. Things will slow down when they approach a limit.

Aeridinae Lunaris

She's not telling Merchants not to be Merchants...

Aeridinae Lunaris

Capitalism is one of the symptoms of what she's talking about. She's not talking about capitalism itself.

Aeridinae Lunaris

I'm curious why you think the economy part was subpar...

Aeridinae Lunaris

One is trying to survive what Mare throws at them. The other is steamrolling Beastmen for weeks. Challenge dictates growth.

Noah Swan

Lol, yes, speak with the guy with middle school level education at best about economics. That will go well. Boiling it down... Ludmila is aserting that Merchants, in the chase for endless profits which value may never be realized (think our worlds billionaires with more money than they can spend), will ruthlessly exploit everything to the point that the "world" will suffer. Something easily shown by looking at our world and Ainz's world. However, you are right about a truly incorruptible government with appropriate regulations making capitalism truly work... just that Ludmila, nor anyone around her including the npcs, have any mental framework to reference. It's literally a feudal society where the concept of "capitalism" and "regulatory bodies" don't exist yet and Ludmila's out here trying to figure it out before she makes a fool of herself in front of the npcs.

Noah Swan

Naw. To boil it down... Ludmila is aserting that Merchants, in the chase for endless profit which value may never be realized (think our worlds billionaires with more money than they can spend), will ruthlessly exploit everything to the point that the "world" will suffer. Where did you get "merchants can't merchant" out of that? Our capitalistic society literally has nature reserves, national parks, species going extinct due to exploitation of natural resources, etc. Ludmila is speaking about the vague idea of "capitalism" going "to far" and the world suffering for it. You know... something we're arguably experiencing right now in the real world? Or do you think Ludmila's religion would force her to accept capitalistic exploitation of the world until it becomes like Ainz's world? Where it's a dystopia ball of toxins due to human activity?

Noah Swan

It is disappointing Ludmila got weaker. I'm assuming this means Ludmila lost levels but that's not confirmed since Ludmila is not referencing any empherical ways to measure levels and instead is stating how she feels. That levels could be lost even with the "natural" respawn revenants have really shouldn't surprise you. The new world has had a game system inflicted upon it which manifests in part as levels. In the game when you die you simply respawn and lose levels as a consequence. What did Ludmila do? She died, respawned, and presumably lost levels. It makes sense. Perhaps you're just disappointed Ludmila won't be having spars with a member of the Pleiades any time soon? Taken to an extreme, I'd rather Ludmila stays away from the strength of the true elites of the world instead of the series turning into dragon ball like fights when only realm of hero characters become relevant.

Maakolo

Ludmilla isnt infallible. She has her own prejudeces and assumptions that color her thoughts.

Nodon667

i think you've had a fundamental misunderstanding of what she was saying just like Florine. she's not telling them to stop making profit quiet, not even remotely what she's asking them to do would probably increase profits if anything. She's telling them to stop treating everything like an unused resource, that a tree doesn't exist for the market is fine and instead of seeing it as an unused tree to be sold later they should just see it as what it is, a tree. when they want trees to sell they'll have to wait for trees to naturally enter the market either through it falling naturally or growing trees for the purpose of being turned into usable wood as they're already doing in coreline. so what she's asking for is not much different from how we do it irl or do you look at a forest and think to yourself "wow i sure do hope those sell for a good amount" at worst this is a good example of how 2 different job classes force people that are on a base level very similar to one another into completely different lines of thought and how they could potentualy reach a middle ground

Gopard

Thanks for the chapter! This is pretty obvious plot driving in this chapter in my opinion. I mean it was mentioned that Ludmilla died constantly in her training to be an adventurer and she still ended up stronger than before! Now you are telling me after month of "fighting and fulfilling her role as her class dictates" she dies once and the entirety of progress is lost? That's just bullshit honestly!

Jacubus

"This was doubly strange since she had grown considerably weaker with her recent death, becoming not much stronger than she had been before she was deployed to the Draconic Kingdom." So, what is the point of her being a revenant when she loses so many levels anyway? This also removes her progress (in levels) from the previous book, making it all for nothing. From story point this just feels bad. Also as others mentioned, that economy part was also subpar. Overall this chapter is a notable drop in quality when compared to previous few chapters. I'm sorry, but this just isn't good.

Sparkley Unicorn

Hopefully, this gets a retcon. I'm unsure if it was intended or not, but Ludmila is definitely going against her established faith and teachings she's been learning. A merchant in this world is undoubtedly a class, and to tell merchants not to be merchants is very contradictory. The purpose of profit is for a merchant to gain experience, gain funds to fund more ventures and become a better merchant to serve her God and master their class. Economics don't matter, what matters is that the "truth of the world" has been twisted, and adapted. Classes and such now exist, economics us no longer simply just a made up construct. Their society is built on the strongest foundation possible. The pursuit of ability and worth in service to a God king, and this I mean wholly unironically. That's simply what Ainz is in this world, ESPECIALLY as an immortal. That's at least how I see it at the moment, the last couple of chapters have been making me dislike Ludmila a lot. Hopefully this isn't seen as overly critical, I've been loving the story, That's why I joined a patron. Please address this in some way, if possible. Whether the contradiction is pointed out, or whatever.

Vladerag

Can someone please get Ludmilla an economics book? Or have her talk with Ainz? Her grasp on economics is hurting me, badly. I know why she is thinking the way she does, but she is wrong. Ainz needs to set her on the right path by showing her the value of the market economies and strong, central, regulatory bodies. You can't lobby an Elder Lich. Undead administration of regulation is the ultimate solution to runaway capitalism! XD

Lost Boys

Pervy Sage is going to love this chapter. I honestly forgot about Qrs and Lewdmilla shooting with the Rune bow

Noah Swan

Ugh, Ludmila getting weaker is a drag. I was really hoping her levels wouldn't be affected but since "game rules" are enforced then a natural respawn is still going to come with penalties I suppose. Though I see the issue with Ludmila becoming too strong for the moment as her becoming too strong can detract from the story. Also... I'm not surprised by Ludmila and Shalltear's activities but I'm a bit surprised by Ludmila's nonchalance about the whole thing. Granted pain doesn't mean all that much to Ludmila any more and Ludmila places duty above literally everything even if that duty is pleasing her lady. Edit: Also Ludmila is definitely not wrong with money allowing terrible things to be acceptable so long as they're out of sight and out of mind.

Noah Swan

Lol, set for the wrong 7:00.
