These afterword are amazing as always :) And im so much reassured to have finnaly word of the author, he really have put auto-update schedule for this period and was not posting comment but he was not dead :PPP Little thing (and only one who jumped in my eyes) :p 190 Str / 210 Dex / 130 Constitution / 130 HP (at level 5) Feel the Constitution and HP of Ludmilla is wrong/missed in this last line on the stats and power explication? 134 Str / 154 Dex / 144 Con / 144 HP was for level 1 Noble Fighter Ludmilla So Florine have with her OP Diplomancy build in her old world/reality of low level one have alway more or less have her way and not faced failure at all if she worked on something and so put her mind into it (reinforcing her way/view and ways of doing things (as correct and the 'good' (only?) way to do) immensely), i guess the multiple reality check and failure she get here in her skill checks for the first time in her life is a really really big shock to her, (we see she can't anymore support it in the end and 'basically flee crying' xD, this time period was really hard for her) wonder how she will turn and change/grow after that :)

This is a part why this story is awesome, there is layers in it and if my first reading of it get me a peek and feeling at most of them, it was not untill my second reading that i really see most of the little details and implying things still uncovered and weaved into it and working in the background, hell im sure i still miss some little one here and here about what the author put into it (it was great grow for me with English not being my native language) Still yeah peoples (and where they come and experienced before?) just see and understand what they see and want and they are just what they are...and will always

One of the good things about this series is you never really see people complaining that the author is supportive of anything just because a character presents it matter of factly. All too often you can't discuss these topics without people assuming you believe that x is good or bad and that's without a character voicing an opinion in writing to the reader.

Thanks for the amazing afterword, I feel like I'm reading a post on r/AskHistorians it was so comprehensive and well articulated, as to be expected of the amazing aeridinae! I still struggle to summarize the totality of Valkyrie's Shadow to other people, after reading this maybe I'll start saying it's "What if Overlord but we included all the politics that gamers want 'out of my games' (wait like minorities and queerness or like communism?) Yes."

Also, a relevant quote from act 4 chapter 3: "She wasn’t sure whether the slaves even considered themselves slaves once they got used to things. Most of them had come from the Realms Below and Khazanar was an island of order and security within that insanely dangerous environment."

Sara

I've seen some of those comments in royal road and I seriously think that they're somehow reading an entirely different story sometimes… Your world building is super interesting and I'm definitely interested to see where it goes!

Sara

High level slaves are generally treated quite well, so I'd imagine that high level slaves are incentivised to not revolt or else lose those privileges/die. That means that only lower level slaves that can't meet the basic requirements are likely to revolt, and if they're low level, they're not likely to succeed. This is especially true when you consider that low level slaves most likely don't have good commanders to organise them.

I would assume that class shenanigans play a larger role than you think. A slave will just be trained as a soldier, and thus gain skills related to their vocation. A slave master will gain skills useful for managing slaves and preventing uprisings. Coupled with the fact that slaves in the dark dwarf empire are generally treated right and actually gain something by being a slave in an Empire in comparison to being alone in that cruel world I can totally see such a system not only being able to survive, but being very competitive. The slaves in the Dragon Kingdom invaded by the beastmen however never encountered any skilled individuals convincing them of a slaves life, were actively influenced by someone with extremely powerful skills to resist (their Queen), and just had generally absolutely no advantage to working together with the invaders. In such cases, you are right, a system of slavery probably won’t survive. (Though I do admit that my point is a bit stretched comparing battle slaves with ‘livestock’.

Yeah, as I also stated before I believe it may have something to with the "class-mentality" perhaps slave are just "compelled" by their class to be more accepting of this sort of situation? I still feel like there would be some kind of rebellion though... Especially with the things shown here, even IF Dark dwarf soldiers are the only ones with "combat-classes" the physical slaves get 40-50% of the stats too... Now add to that the fact they outnumber them (I assume this to be the case from discriptions) and even at levels up to 10? (I really am not sure how high the dwarves go in level, but as the Vampire bride survived the conflict zone quite handily I'll assume below level 15.) Sooo, we have a huge number of slaves who may well be straight up stronger than even the soldiers keeping them (they do have beastmen and other kinds of "physical enhanced races" as slaves), I can't think of anything apart from the "psionics" Dark Dwarves have and then special class-shenanigans (slave master towards slaves for example) that keep this system running somewhat smoothly. (the argument that they weed out all the "rebellious ones" doesn't hold, Rome also did that and almost fell to slave uprisings and the colonizers also took similar measures.) In the end I still doubt this kind of society would function for such a long time even with all the "special circumstances" making it very hard to claim "this is unrealistic". Even a "beastman" or "stupid demi human" must have a certain threshold of cruelty, abuse and torture they can take before snapping...

Just want to say love your work, you're world building and confidence in your understanding of it (which more authors need) is amazing. It's a shame you are getting a rough treatment on royal road, but I hope to keep reading your work for a long time.

Probably because slaves arnt trained as leaders so they can’t really be organized

Jacob Carver

You’ve been doing an amazing job! The afterwards are some of my favorite parts of the series. It’s awesome how organized you are and how much thought you put into the story. The part I’m still a bit hung up on is why don’t slaves revolt more often in this world? It feels like they outnumber the masters in population AND levels. Weren’t slave revolts a huge thing throughout earth history? I figure they would be even more successful when all the slaves are power-leveled monsters.
