About the authors note. While it may not help you I'm any way. But I do have to say it out loud. This story is a small piece in our lives that keeps the darkness at bay. It's something that keeps us waiting for that next chapter. And every time it arrives it lets us enjoy something every now and than. Like a box of chocolate we put on the desk and only take one piece every now and than. Even if it's one piece a week, it keeps us going another week.

quote Once again, Lord Mare was smashed into the arena wall. When he emerged from the cloud of dust this time, however, an ominous sound accompanied his persecuted cries. “Ufufufufu…ufufufufu!” “What is that noise?” Ludmila asked. “It’s Albedo,” Lady Shalltear answered. end quote THIS is exactly what Ludmila was looking for! Back in the Tiger and the Dragon, she wanted to terrorize the beastmen running away from the undead advance and create more negative energy. However, her idea of unadulterated violence and bloody massacre were worse than her usual "predator stalking the prey" approach. The ominous laughter is just what she needed there to really drive the terror and desperation deep into the beastmen's souls. The laughter doesn't really fit Ludmila's character, but the practicality of using such a laughter as a tactic does fit her.

Some good thoughts to chew over such as successful young countries having some kind of lynchpin holding them together. Britain’s former settler colonies ie Canada, Australia & New Zealand have the King/Queen and a governor general as a theoretical break glass incase of emergency. While the US has had its trilateral balance of power with the executive, legislative & judicial branch’s of power checking and balancing each other with the constitution as a touchstone. While the Western hegemony led by the US and centered around the American Navy in particular. Its presence allowing free trade and competition for resources to play out in the “free marketplace” as opposed to on the battlefield. The US Army’s post Vietnam reforms while making it a fully professional force has seen it at its greatest strength the disconnect between the people and the ruling class has grown and become ossified. While Vietnam started the trajectory of politically easier wars by allowing draft dodging by the upper classes who are more politically influential and potentially troublesome. It led to a breakdown of the postwar political and socioeconomic order. There’s a lot to be said about a foreign policy where the policy makers have to think what will happen to their sons and daughters if they decide on foreign intervention or war. A professional military that has taken the threat of personal involvement away from all but the most extreme case of another world war. That has reduced civic engagement as it’s someone else’s problem who dies if bad policy choices are made. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that there was a huge rise in political and civic engagement following the Surge in Iraq when the Senate flirted with bringing a vote on the draft to table. 18-35 year olds have been voting in record numbers since 2008 though their engagement isn’t a certainty to be taken for granted by policy makers. With that said while I believe that the draft helped prevent wars it’s never been a permanent U.S. institution. Having a professional army on standby to keep up with technological advances and pass down key knowledge is a boon. Though also a potential liability if taken for granted that someone else will do the fighting for an adventurous foreign policy. The war on terror and the lack of aid to a post military career and healthcare are such examples. Although most of the current problems with the American political system had good opportunity to be addressed during the 1990’s when the US was on a record economic growth streak and was unchallenged abroad. The focus of the 1980’s however on massive military spending via taking on debt and a disinvestment in urban areas & industry made a good set up for squabbling over the spoils of peace. That watergate was still fresh in many minds and the rise of opinion media as a wing of political parties was on the rise didn’t help. However political lines weren’t hardened then as the post 9/11 unity showed. However I’m getting into history and political theory above my pay grade with anything over than the lies of the Iraq War broke that unity allowed ugly forces to percolate up into the mainstream.
