Albedo's Ahoge

Who is this "goodest" boy?

Silmadrillion

I imagine you're referring to reagents they have no basic access to, (ruby dust, etc.) Thing is, even other reagents, they have easy access to so long as A. it can be scavenged for in the woods. B. it can be boosted in growth with magic. Ruby dust and any other earthen based reagents, WV does not have. thing is, they can probably strike a deal with with Zu Chiru. considering he's been burned by the Merchant Guild before (more like their agents, but to him there's no real difference) and that he has no real need for them (the banking function of the MGis being usurped by the SK Mail Service under their noses since it's being marketed for 'non-merchant' individuals). That and the Dwarves... but the dwarves are less likely to give a damn about the MG

Valguris

Once this is over, the talk will be that the guilds picked a fight with Warden's Vale and got expulsed from the entire Sorcerous Kingdom. Do not mess with Warden's Vale.

Oh sorry if it came across that I was making a good or bad judgement on IP. I was more just making an observation from some good arguments I've heard on why companies like nintendo will sometimes smash down hard on small fan projects. Even if it comes at a cost of community backlash and hollowing loyal fanbases its still more important to protect the integrity of the IP. Sometimes you actually see IP holders working behind the scenes with IP infringers where it doesn't hurt the legal integrity of the brand. One excellent example is the story of Pokemon Showdown who seem to have an under the table agreement with GameFreak that lets them host and use official video game music on their website. IP law is a bit ridiculous nowadays with the duration as you said. Lifetime Plus 75 years I think. Also the punishments can be draconian. Your analysis on the economy of Warden's Vale is pretty much spot on. Ludmilla has rock solid connections to multiple economic outlets who are more inclined to help her than exploit their positions of strength as her only option. Clara, Liane and Florine (maybe less Liane) are probably willing to take a hit in order to stand alongside Lud. The only potential weakness of Warden's Vale here is a reliance on exports to fuel rapid development of local industry. And maybe the cultural clout that the guilds have, although we've seen the deep connection she has with her human subjects before so maybe not a big problem.

Silmadrillion

To be absolutely fair. IP in it's initial iteration was in fact very good. I mean, why create something iconic if you won't get anything from it, let alone get your face slapped by the one who stole it. That said, yes... those who had power pushed that needing too damn far. now it stops people from making things they love. The original "two years and every cent made is mine. afterward you can make your derivitives, but I still get name recog." is a very good, justified line. "14 years and thousand years dungeon for looking like my stuff" is ludicrous. As for the story now, unless Sebas is wrong with his read on the people of E-Rantel (let's not include the other baronies), this might need some... finesse. Which to be fair, the have a lot of. What they have too bloody much of, is Zeal. About Warden's Vale, they'll be fine. They can go Isolated markets because their No. 1 customer is the Army and the Adventurer's guild. They may get hit on the textiles front, but considering Clara... Yeah, Ludwig is fine

Ah yes the guild was already doing things considered overreach. But since they have been getting away with it for so long its considered "normal" Copyright law works similarly and is why IP holders are so often zealous about enforcing their rights even if it seems to be a bad decision and creates community backlash. If an IP holder allows unrelated third parties to profit off their product it makes any case they DO try to bring to court weaker since why didn't they go after all the other people who exploited their IP? Having an event like this gives an organic excuse to mop everything back to where it should be without ruffling the feathers of public discourse the wrong way. "We put up with all of this and then you kept going further so we had to respond accordingly." The SK didn't go after this earlier since it was an inseparable part of the underlying culture of Re-Estize and Satoru basically said to leave it alone in order to keep things comfortable and familiar. (at least that's how people interpreted it) And now the consequence is they have to navigate public perceptions of being seen as unusually tyrannical if they act now. Additionally since Satoru has absorbed the local branch of the Adventurer's Guild into the government it sets a precedent for how other establishments can be altered. And the overall positive influence of the changed guild will inspire some confidence in the government's ability to do it again.

Ah the birth of politics, they grow up so fast! It’s cool to see the huge inequality problem the Sorcerers Kingdom is facing come to a head. Humans are 5% of the population yet control and drive most of the financial and manufacturing based economy. We know and love our oligarchs like Claire and Laine who represent huge portions of the economy. It’s nice to see the guilds taking the central governments reforms towards streamlining and efficiency and running with em to crush their nascent competition. Classic politics, they even use religion as a wedge issue for their agenda. Cue the stirring classical music and sound of guillotines. There’s a reason why the French Revolution was kicked off in a big way by the guilds. The inability of ancien regime to reform while facing existential crisis kicked off the whole bloody affair. Yet it was the triumvirate of immovable institutions the local parliaments who jealously guarded their ancient rights / privileges & could only be over ridden by the king if he could handle the blowback. The church who jealously guarded its ancient rights / privileges while not delivering on services for the most part & corrupt at the high levels. Finally the guilds who jealously guarded its ancient rights / privileges & whose system of apprenticeship became a millstone around the neck of young educated professionals. This being the beginning of the industrial revolution the rising middle class / small businesses owners were hemmed in economically by the guilds. I was wondering how the guilds would react as there is a very strong central executive which can very much run rough shot over them if it wants. Now we have the guilds trying to use soft power to take on the very center of hard power in the kingdom. Politics! Although truthfully as revolting as politics are they are better than war which is politics by other means. Yet politics can breed war if two intransigent sides meet and a compromise, exemption or agreement can’t be achieved and or if one side wishes to crush the other or is perceived to. There isn’t a great earth representation here and always using the French Revolution analogy is in itself problematic even if it’s the big one in terms of revolutions in terms of societal impact for Western Europe. While the Russian Revolution is more of an extreme take on completing the goals of the height of the French Revolution in a more comparatively backwards country led by people from the repressed borderlands generally, a different animal. Still it’s almost like watching a natural disaster take place the conflict between the guild representative and Ludmilla. They’re both making huge mistakes, Ludmilla is by misreading the situation and threatening war. The guilds don’t have the ability to wage war and the prime minister may see this as rebellion losing the tremendously strong position Ludmilla gained by her recent conversations. The guilds well their whole idea to threaten economic war against Wardens Vale was a terrible idea and by using intermediaries it’s blown up into a full fledged “constitutional crisis”. Scary stuff but it can all be deescalated with a few words not that civil war is at all a remote possibility as of yet with the close personal relationships. It would take a lot of bad blood & misunderstandings between a lot of friendly and or well associated people to get the pitchforks out. That said conceivably this events could conceivably spark a civil war or a civil war with revolutionary tenants it’s a big potential crisis. Fortunately it’s still at the phase of words and words can be taken back & friends can intervene to talk down heated parties.

Silmadrillion

Goodest of boys most probably. As for shooting first, the things the Guild have been doing were already something SK already considered overreach. To our modern sensibilities, they definitely do, specially the marriages. It doesn't even show noticeable reason unlike The Six Church, thou maybe it just something we don't know specifically except politics... which everyone hates politics.

ovrsurge

I highly doubt the sorcerous kingdom would let anything too bad happen to their special military and economic zone. Even the guilds are likely limited by the law on trade restrictions within the SK. Unless of course they want to try to hide from the intelligence agencies and encourage their members to boycott some things which are essentially government run enterprises. This is really bad for the Guilds since it coincides well with Albedo's plan to weaken them. But also makes it look like the guilds took the first shot. I wonder if somebody pressured them into doing it at this point in time specifically.

Ohh, it is getting good!

John E vanidestine

Can't wait to see how this new development proceeds.

Silmadrillion

Oof. Fraudulent applications are about to put those blacksmiths out of business. Tho I kinda think it was goodest boy who "quietly passed" the tip to the guild. To be fair, this has been set up since the volume began.

Jacubus

"Secondly, the y fraudulent practices" additional y out of nowhere.

Thanks for the chapter! I would have loved if Ludmilla had summoned he shadow demon right there in view of the representative and said something along the lines of "It would appear as we expected the guilds have made their move to sabotage and stymie the development of the sorcerous Kingdom as his majesty and the Prime Minister expected. Convey to their Excellencies that I would ask permission to move forward with discussed plans to deal with and curb the guilds festering influence and corruption in the region." Lol!

With how Albedo just get in the move by Ainz about the Guilds and urban social thingy and all that That will be interesting, this confrontation that we get here and maybe we get some shadowing (and indirect/unseen) of different angle support to Ludmilla and multiple move by Albedo in this clash who is to come As Albedo surely will use it to start reform thing and i guess take full control of the guilds in the end, that the guild are not a official institution controlled and managed by the government in the future seem off and unlikely to happen (and as Albedo is a control freak and all others reason, no way she let it like how it is as of now and they stay 'Guild' without solid oversight and them be telling direction to go of SK government/bureaucracy/leadership) A bit of wonder who tell the Guild :P Slight possibility its Lianne who forced thing a bit to happen faster, but that really a dick move xD (maybe not on her viewpoint and think she help in the end) as she too frustrated or etc over the thing and try to show 'the light' to Ludmilla and make her understand and blabla

Aeridinae Lunaris

Fixed, I think...

The Mobile Black PDF version is a duplicate of Before the Storm, Act 08, Chapter 06 by the way.

Oh yes, this is the Ludmila we well know. Things are really going to be speeding up aren't they? Between a spat with the guilds, Rolengorek, and whenever the absorption of the rest of Re-Estize hits... Consequences!

Ben
