I.....have.....so many questions....like, what the actual hell? Once again, your cliffhanger(swear to Arceus you've got a freaking ability called that) just makes want more!! TFTC

TLDR; I can see your point but I disagree. Can't say I saw that coming either but I don't dissaprove. It's often those closest to us that end up hurting you the most. Smeargle probably did still care for his old trainer but Ethan has established that he easily connects with Pokémon on an emotional level as an empath. Smeargle being controlled by his old trainer in a way that prevents him from even saying goodbye to his new friends would be fairly traumatic. I also think it's been established that, whilst fairly intelligent, most Pokémon have an emotional and intellectual intelligence of a younger human. That doesn't mean that battling is terrible. Pokémon, like animals, have natural instincts and nature's more in tune with agressive but intelligent animals, like a trained pit bull. Maturity on an intellectual level does not equate to development on an emotional level. Tinkatink is smart enough to build and construct tools but is still less than a year old. As for Max falling on hard times... we don't know how financially solvent he was when he first visited max nor do I believe facing a gym multiple times would be light on your wallet. Medical supplies, battle items, food, lodging, training, etc. Being a trainer could easily be quite expensive, especially in what is meant to be a more realistic and visceral take on the world, and without a reliable or steady source of income I could easily see that money drying up faster than expected. Fast enough that when you find yourself struggling to eat for a few days and you happen to see your old smeargle walking about alone, you might go see if he wants to rejoin you so you might be able to sell a few paintings... hence buying art supplies. Oh? But how are you going to afford those supplies when you're broke? Well, well, well... looks like smeargle has a fancy Sylph Co bag and some money on hand maybe he can help out? But Ethan gave smeargle that money to get a few specific things! Smeargle is reluctant to do that, he needs to get back to Ethan and he promised he wouldn't. But Max is struggling here, and smeargle wants to leave! Smeargle isn't a fighter and Max has a gym ready team, so he stops him and forces him to buy the art supplies and come with him. Smeargle is being forced against his will to betray someone he believes to be a friend by an old friend. I don't think this is too sudden or unexplainable. Perhaps an additional chapter or some insight in the next one can explain everything, desperate people do stupid things and many people are a few missed meals away from doing terrible things. I've worked with kids whose family have done horrible things in desperation or frustration when struggling financially. Allright, If you read all that thank you. Your points are still valid and I do think there should be some explanations to come but I believe everything in this chapter is perfectly reasonable and should be taken as part of the larger story rather than something that in a vacuum appears weak.

O-K, didn't expect it to be his old trainer. So, sorry but I'm going to be critical again. Read it if you want, or ignore it. That's fine too, negative feedback is never pleasant and in the end this is just my opinions. A bit rambly, and I'm far from a professional. I've just read... A lot. But, yeah, didn't like this chapter either. It all feels super contrived. It also makes two more character look bad. By that I mean Smeargle and Max. Upside: It brings Jenny back into good-ish standing. Which I assume is the point. Downside: But it kneecaps three characters to get to that position, which really doesn't feel worth it. (When looking at both this and last chapter.) Since I loath being critical without explaining my reasoning: Max and Smeargle had a tear-filled farewell just months ago in universe. Nothing has been shown that tells me Smeargles allegiance would have shifted so fully from Max to Ethan, which means the tear-filled reunion here feels unearned... I would have expected Smeargle to just tell Max to that he'd be happy to come with him again. They'd just need to talk to Ethan about it. Needs and wants can change, but I don't think that has been properly on display for Smeargle. And then there's the infantilising of Smeargle here at the end as well... I suppose we don't actually know the Pokémons age, but if it has the mental age of 8 like this chapter makes it feel like, then battling Pokémon suddenly becomes quite terrible. Even a small Pokémon distinctly isn't a human. It's a creature with literally super-human powers, and I would expect that if Smeargle wanted to, he could literally rip the arms off of a human. With ease. (Provided the human doesn't know Aura techniques.) You've already made the point that Pokémon are dangerous. A tiny little Oddish can easily kill a human with their poison. To suddenly go and make Smeargle out to be some vulnerable little kid just feels... Off. And Max... Even if he's stalled out against the gym fight, it feels like too little time for him to become so desperate. Unless he got a gambling addiction as well while he's been in town. If he was a respectable trainer before this, then that's one hell of a character switch in just a couple of months. If it had been a couple of *years* I'd buy it. But now unless we find out he got addicted to Meth, becoming this desperate after such a short amount of time feels very counter to what was shown of him before... Anyway, that's enough for now. Everyone can have their own opinion, this is just mine, not worth more than any other.
