The distinction between their roles doesn’t alter Israel’s moral calculus. Survival, not reputation, drives its policy, with little concern for how convincingly it can justify its actions to the West. In stark contrast, NATO’s fragmented posture reveals a lack of strategic resolve. Each member state pursues its own agenda, and the alliance has yet to formulate a coherent response to Russia’s salami-slicing provocations. Poland’s decision to scramble warplanes against Russian drones in its airspace is unprecedented, but it merely exposes an asymmetric financial burden: expensive western interceptors deployed against cheap, expendable threats. What Putin gains from these incursions is not narrative control or psychological dominance, but proof of NATO’s timidity and a clearer sense of where its red line actually lies and how faintly it’s drawn. Now he sees an alliance unwilling to risk confrontation, even as its military edge erodes in Ukraine’s grinding war. The message is clear: NATO has the hardware, but not the stomach.
