A quick summation of their backgrounds:
Vanessa- Pageant princess with a need for attention found her voice on the stage.
Lex- An apprentice from over the Warden Ocean, imprisoned with a murder conviction after his powers manifested.
Walker- Farm boy who lost his family after tragedy destroyed his family home.

I noticed in Walker's traumatic backstory of his family home being destroyed and losing his family is a bit similar to what he did to deleon, destroying deleon's home and "killed" his friends which deleon probably seen as family. That's why he regretted what he did, he probably related to it.
