The idea of all my sources of info going dark scares and depresses me. Been thinking a lot about it since the war heated up in Feb. (I'm in Canada where I don't think we've domain blocked anyone on a national level yet)

With respect to the future of censorship and podcasting. Podcasts can be self hosted and users can use RSS grabbers that aren't cloud based and don't censor. One of my favorite sites is nakedcapitalism.com which pays for its own hosting on it's own hardware ( I believe in Iceland, though that might have recently changed) They're purely voluntarily reader funded .. They do annual fund drives and usually raise a quarter million or so as far as I can tell. They're old fashioned but they remind me of the old internet I grew up with in the 90s (I'm 35). But I think that sort of thing is really the only option for the future. Or like Robbie said maybe even going back further to Usenet and bulletin boards. Depressing. Another option is using foreign services in "official enemy" nations, but I assume itll be pretty easy for north america to be cut off from Telegram or WeChat for example. Anyway, you should regularly export a list of your subscribers emails (hopefully patreon exposes them to you) in case you get whacked. Email is pretty basic and is hard to fuck with, though it gets murky with everyone having their email through one of the evil huge companies....

Aaron, re: your doubts about whether accounts are authentic or personas, do you know the story of Barrett Brown and Project PM? He was reporting out the findings of a subset of “Anonymous” operations that, among other things, exposed an operation in which private spy contactors were building a “persona management” system for manipulating social networks using puppet accounts. This earned him a reprisal and he got sent up for some years on trumped up charges. Dude has dealt with some terrifying deep political repercussions. He’s living in the UK now last I heard. Hilarious and brilliant guy, seems like a real one. He could be a great guest for a future show.
