I've lived in St. Louis, MO and Philadelphia, PA (modulo a bit of work travel), but never Canada for any stretch and my first thought was: he (as a Van Island, never mind BC, native) must just be doing that as a Bit on Newfies, right? (The closest I've ever been to "Newfndlnd" is that a college friend's fathers relocated there for a bit - I never visited - and it was shockingly wrong to *my* ear.)

I pay 20 for a variety 8 pack since it has my so far two top root beers. Mostly since my top does not really do cost effective sales to the individual, last I checked they were doing 60 for a 12 pack lol

I've only ever had one birch beer, so I don't know if it was truly a representative example of the format, but it really did just taste like a high quality root beer to me. I am a big root beer guy, so I definitely enjoyed it, but the specialty factor increases the price-per-bottle because you can only find it from small brands as like an $8 four pack

Yes! When I grew up there (in the 80s), it was common to get a birch beer "ball" for parties. A brown glass globe with a pump on top. So it was not unusual to see a bunch of kids standing around filling up their own cups, just like a keg.
