The deHaven Smith comment about the river of shit is so interesting to me as a graduate student. I know its part of practice in school in both qualitative and quantitative research methods classes to learn to focus on a small research question and operationalizing variables, but I always see that I am provide analysis on the river of shit rather than what is causing the river of shit. Do you know where that quote is from, or if it was just said in passing?

Was just watching an old episode of alternative views and Peter was name checked by Doug Kellner talking about one of Peter's books describing George HW Bush pushing arm sales to the Iranians and trying to bring them back into OPEC so that the oil price would stabilize for Bush's Texas oil contacts
