Right & left are moreso social brands or signifiers now as opposed to coherent political philosophies - this makes the terms very useful for people who want to ensure political subfactions remain isolated & politically impotent, with the anti-imperialist left and antiwar libertarians on foreign policy just one example where a political position or a potential alliance is thwarted by the opportunistic use of the social stigma attached to a brand as opposed to an honest reckoning with the specific policy. That this works so well is indicative of our national immaturity or, as John Lukacs wrote, the importance we place upon social respectability. Thus we are a compliant, easily herded people, national myths to the contrary aside.

As a Texan, I grew up listening to Alex Jones, and can say with some authority that there are intrinsic differences between neo-bitcher rightist approaches, like jones (who repackaged international communism as the NWO or “the globalists”) and scholars like PD Scott that have a cogent analytical framework in which to place “deep events”. The error is IMO rooted in the psychological tendency to use a religious framework rather than a materially rooted systemic analysis. Jones and his ilk have never been able to discern how power relations are mediated through political economies.
