Scintillant Blade can pierce System born defences. Something I've demonstrated in the past is that it has no inherent physical penetration ablities.

ThoMiCroN

Why is Nathan not destroying a few runes? The ritual would be for naught without them and his Scintillating Blade can pierce anything…

Reid Thompson

This was my suspicion for why it wasn't brought when he mentioned having throwing weapon proficiency at level 1. Thanks for confirming that

This isn't a spoiler, so I don't mind saying it. The reason Scintillant Blade doesn't work on ranged weapons like bows isn't that they're not sufficiently blade like, it's because arrows are not in contact with Nate after being loosed. In other words, the weapon has to be held by Nate at all times in order to maintain the effect. So, unfortunately, throwing weapons won't work either.

Reid Thompson

Yeah, i get that it's nigh impossible, but he's a pretty smart guy, so there's some disonance in my mind with how fast and loose he's used his silver bullet, especially so recently after getting burnt by not instantly finishing Longstripe. I see your point though, it's unlikely that he could have really gotten a clean shot, at least not without making several risky attacks to let her not even worry about his weapon. As an aside, it doesn't work on arrows (which is splitting hairs because many arrowheads are just very small blades), but would it work on throwing knives/axes?

The problem of not having his own Mana or Ki is going to be solved relatively soon, considering how close he is to 100. And Nate is trying to kill Nerexxa, I promise you. The problem is that aiming a proper killing blow against something moving so much quicker than he is without deliberate assistance is extremely, extremely difficult. The entire point of the fight scene with Nerexxa was to demonstrate that everyone was working together and doing their best to give such a low-level person a shot to unexpectedly kill something so far above anyone that's there. Honestly, not even Grey or Honoka could easily smoke Nerexxa, and it's a miracle that Baldric and Longstripe harried her as far as they did. Something I haven't spoken about yet is that the Elderwyck arc has a specific purpose, beyond all of the high stakes being introduced. And that's for Nate to REALLY make a name for himself on Vereden. Something beyond being Grey's oddball apprentice, or a member of the Order, or even a Nocturne Division Agent. This is, in my mind, where Nate starts to come into his own. For reasons that will become apparent within the next few weeks, as things REALLY fall apart.

Reid Thompson

So is Nathan ever going to stop giving away his lethality on insignificant flesh wounds? This is like the 3rd or 4th time he's done this. Also, i feel like the threat escalation is a little insane. Our MC doesn't even have mana or ki unlocked and now a divine enemy is getting introduced? I mean, i can think of a few ways this can go for him to scale up in power "safely", like going to another planet, but i still feel like he's way too far out of his depth for these foreshadowed "consequences". While i think Grey and Honoka are too much a crutch or too large of a safety net for the story to have any real tension, I'm not sure how i feel about summoning what i presume is the old chaos god of this planet *this soon*. At least it feels soon. Maybe it's just Nate's progression feels "slow" because he still only has his first class, and he's being forced to constantly fight people that are proper cultivators or mages.

Nomad

Damn that was a good fight scene. Hopefully Baldric doesn't die.
