Nomad

You're a cruel, cruel man author. Hopefully Sylvia gets her memories back as Nate really needs all of the support he can get.

The Uub

Honestly I would have run amok already if I was this MC. I get dragged into this world, thrown into the middle of a war, my dad is dead, I lose an eye, an arm, I make new friends in a new division and most of them fucking die on me, the light gods use me in a plot to defeat the summoning of a dark god to this plane and then the light gods (one of whom is cucking another with my self proclaimed mentor who couldn't get himself out of a trap) then sent me back down to finish the job and kill this higher servant of the dark god, very likely knowing what would happen to me once I did the Dee's, and now metal girlfriend has woken up and conveniently has amnesia starting just before any point which would have given her a clue I existed. Yeah I would have noped right off and disengaged myself from this group which seems to only use me and cause me bad luck.

That's fair. Don't get me wrong about the bad stuff. A lot of it made sense and I didn't really have any problem with it. The slavery arc made sense, so did the thing about him losing his arm, (in spite of how crappy that was for him... it made sense); but when he ended up causing himself brain damage, losing vision in one eye, and massively damaging one of his most important skills all just to keep Sylvia from dying right in front of him.... From then until he got his sight back, based on how healing his arm was impossible, I really struggled to see any future for Nate that didn't involve him just repeatedly losing more and more of himself and never really getting anything back for it. Him having his vision fixed was good, but even though I am intellectually fine with everything happening, (I mean, it all makes sense. It is all consistent with the world, the society, and the events), but emotionally it makes it hard to stay invested in the story if I am struggling to feel some confidence that the main character is going to come through things in a way that I will feel decent about. After all, real life is already hard, so though I like my fiction to be "realistic" I don't want it to be depressing. :/ So I just really hope that we will see Nate start to pull himself together, because you have done a really good job of tearing him down and showing him starting to fall apart; and I just don't want to read a story about someone becoming broken. :/ I want him to, eventually, embrace the strength that his ability to steal skills gives him. I want him to, eventually, embrace the strength that his "curse" gives him. I want to see him stop being a victim of everything and start being able to take some ownership for who he will be and how he will deal with things, because right now, (even though I think it's a believable response for him), he treats even some good things as if they are horrible just because he has been so shit on that it feels like he is losing his sense of agency. Like I said, I understand all of it and even agree with a lot of it. I'm prior military and, honestly, Nate's gotten off pretty easy compared to some of the real world people I know; but I guess that's also why I almost walked away when it felt like he was going to get too real in how much he is going to lose. He needs a "win" somewhere in here that is his. Sorry for the long post. I guess it just show's how much I love the story you are creating and how much I like it that I am this invested in what's happening to Nate. Anyway, I'm glad to hear things will turn around for him. I really hope he gets his head together, (though I understand that it will take him some time if written in a realistic way, which I'm fine with. I just hope to see it happening).

Yeah, I get it. All of the major bad 'things' that were meant to hit Nate have now happened, and Nate will likely be a bit depressed and moody about them. But not to the point of wallowing, I'd say. I have no desire to write depressive spirals. Nate has a support network and a number of friends that will help support him. Also, his place in society is going to change a bit. I hesitate to call the next near book of material an 'upswing', but it won't be near as harsh as the war has been on him. I've already hinted at what's coming after the conclusion of the war, and that's coming quickly. The war doesn't have much juice in it left, and there really isn't much the Loyalists can muster to defend what's happened. The climax has occured, and now we're in the falling action.

I’m glad to hear some acknowledgment about how straight up horrible things have been for Nate. I hadn’t taken the time to say anything about it, but….. honestly, when he lost his middle ring and his vision in one eye I almost just dropped this story since his previously lost arm had already established that he wouldn’t be able to properly heal from those losses. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have a story where the character experiences real hardship, but there has to be a point where he has something go right for him or else there is honestly no reason for him to even bother trying to care anymore.

Erik Zimmerman

As one of the ones who spoke up about "shitting on Nate" a couple chapters ago, I actually don't mind this one. He still doesn't "deserve" it, I feel bad for him, but personal relationships can be restored with time and effort, usually unlike build decisions in stories like these and racial adjustments and such. Like you said, there's still hope. And better this than Sylvia being dead. Thanks for the chapter
