I didn't believe it then, and I don't believe it now. What truly struck me, though, what made that memory stand out, was that the other child who told me that was smiling as he did so. Even at that early age, I understood how this horrid belief appealed to the darker side of humanity.

This gave me chills. Especially the image of the church parishioners smiling and laughing at their perceived fate of LGBTQ individuals.
