San Francisco Streets (Part 2)
🕑 Added 2023-11-10 17:45:53 +0000 UTCIn this episode, we shadow a retail boosting squad and graffiti crew called "Finesse Em' All" (FEA) and reunite with some old friends on a Tenderloin trap corner called the 'Woo Block' :)
In the next episode, we'll actually shadow 'Jack the Bipper' on a real boosting mission.
We're trying to go above and beyond to give all of our loyal supporters extended content WAY in advance. In fact, these videos may live behind the paywall forever. I'm not sure if YouTube will ever allow this content, based upon what I know about their community guidelines.
FYI - the delay was because I added a segment about the history of Fentanyl, and Big Pharma's role in all this.
I'd also really like to know which parts of this series you enjoyed, what could be cut, or what you feel like I left out. All of this will be crucial in editing our final product. So please let me know!
Enjoy.

The pills are not Percocet laced with fentanyl. Itâs fentanyl made into the shape of a 30mg roxycodone, though I suppose that doesnât matter much when your loved one is gone either way.

I love you channel 5! Thanks for making documentaries like this (Im from SF and more attention needs to be brought to the drugs and homelessness)

ive been a fan foreva and jus became a patron today !! my only critique is that the music during the interviews is too loud and starts and stops abruptly/awkwardly. itâs kinda distracting at times to me. but regardless i love ur content !!!
Jeremy Eckert
Loved this vid. Some quick feedback / criticism: some of your research was rushed and lazy. It's called COVID NINETEEN because it originated in 2019, not "early 2020". Also, when you said "There isn't any music about fentanyl" I IMMEDIATELY thought of Pinto by The Alchemist & Boldy James. "get a brick of blow and cut it / hit it with the fentanyl." Research MORE than just five minutes, guys. I know you're at your best when you're out on the streets capturing raw reality, but it's slip ups like these which can hurt your credibility.

Iâm from the Bay Area, born and raised. I live on the east coast now, my family has lived in the bay for the last 100 years. Really appreciate the coverage of the city and how you guys talk to the real people who live there with a non judgmental, compassionate, and earnest voice.

Man did you even watch the video. They make light of the situation but its not like they could just get a job and support themselves, the system is too fucked. Just listen to the guy say he´d love to get a Union job in the future.

The GOLDEN AGE of channel 5!

One thing I think is missing, which you may get to, is how segregated SF is. The marina/pac heights/nob hill is super nice and feels very safe, however Soma and the Tendy are sketch. It's quite bizarre.

Man, I just subbed tonight - I've got to say, these San Fran videos are some of the best pieces of journalism I've seen in a very long time. These will be some of the most important news clips of our time someday.

Enjoying every second of these. I really appreciate the long form content. IMO between the more more intense back and forth cuts of news, you could give even more space to people talking about their experience. In the first video I really appreciated the interview with the guy who doesn't want to die before his mom. I also thought it was amazing to hear the booster guy go from bragging about the boosting life to thinking about his future. Best part was hearing the Hoff twin tune before they even appeared! Keep up the awesome work!

Channel 5 is the best!!! Thank you for these vids of my home town. Gotta say that the guys robbing all the stores and pistol-whipping and car-jacking innocent people are the worst!! Eff those dudes! They literally don't care about anyone or anything. The worst! Put those guys away for a long time please! They have scary bad karma coming their way!
joinusdotorg
its wild to see the impact COVID lock down had in SF, i think you should interview the TECH BROS that stared this mess in the first place (we didn't really get to hear their side), and see how they feel... in hindsight, they probably don't know whats going on in the streets because they just create the technology from the comfort of their own homes. its difficult to get a hold of someone in tech because they sign nda's and don't come out of the house.. its a tough one! hope this helps!

Whenâs part 3 dropping???𤤠I live in the Bay and no oneâs covering this the way you guys are. I donât usually comment on the internet , but I gotta say Andrew , you and the channel 5 team are doing GOAT level work rn for journalism and keeping us young folks tuned in. Not on some conspiracy shit, but I feel like the effort to promote media literacy was threatening to legacy outlets and the powerful people they serve. âCancellationâ (as tired as that convo is) always seems to come along when someone outside the frame is doing something actually informative or beneficial for the public. So fwiw, just wanted to say, aside from the validity of the allegations or the personal work youâve done, Iâm glad you not only returned, but came back even more hungry, dropping gems like this SF series and keeping us entertained with pieces like Toronto mans. Genius shit. Much love and channel 5 forever âď¸
Kai Castro
The interviews with people are of course the lifeblood of your work, but your narration montage summaries have gotten incredible as well. Loving the blend of the two styles.

So interesting! Are there any other cities experiencing this similar level of crime? I canât wrap my head around how SF comes out of this. Is it just the new normal or will things change with sweeping legislation? So many questions

He said "could get us into a lot of trouble", but I don't think he meant with the law. More likely get in trouble with the people who run this scheme or benefit from it, and don't need it to be exposed to a wide audience. If they show where the recruitment happens, the recruiters can be tracked down, and it's the same at every level of the operation. In some places it might also be a problem for the people that Channel 5 worked with: if they show this system working with impunity, both cartel members worried about security and corrupt cops made to look bad might punish those involved locally.
Nico
Whatever those twins said⌠wow, right on from an amazing angle. 14:00

I'm pretty sure this became a street therapy session when he talked about joining a union. Everyone needs therapy but this is also the result of extreme inequality in the housing and job market. It's a shame but everyone needs to see it as well, thank you again Andrew.

I was an SF resident for 30 years. What Iâm not seeing here is the attitudes of typical SF residents who justify living in a shithole. You canât point out the obvious without being called hateful or mean by the virtue police. You havenât mentioned Chesa Boudin, nor the cityâs police budget cuts in 2020. SF canât solve its problems without recognizing them in the first place. It will be a long descent down with huge loss of tourism, business, and tax revenue before people finally get sick of it.

besides that, all the content youve produced over the years from AGNB to C5, keep on rockin. salute
law dog
i know youve reuploaded this again, but there are still single frames where i can put together a profile of some of the vigilante faces. i come from a background where dry snitching isnt okay. id be wiling to help edit your footage so this doesnt happen again. its not okay as a professional journalist to let these things slip. these are peoples lives, and youre aware, people dont like their choices.
Morris Aguilar
I want to echo the positive comments from other viewers. What draws me to the Channel 5 is that their previous interviewees are not forgotten and they actually add to the newer content; I like seeing that level of respect. I would like to learn more about is how the local government lost their grasp on this situation. So far you and your team covered the social and economic side of these challenges (which were great by the way). I curious how the govt components play in. I am looking forward to next videos!
Ejazzle
Dude there could never be too long of a video of all this. Wouldn't mind and extended cut or a longer version of some other interviews from around the bay area.

TWINS DUN DID IT AGAIN

Also I think it's totally fucked to prey on the tourists. All the bippers dump luggage in my neighborhood, and we're constantly finding passports, medicine, etc. from folks from all over the world. We basically have a group here that tries to unite the belongings back with the owners.
Chris
I live in SF, and have for 12 years. I would be really interested in how the non-profits play a role in the bureaucracy and corruption of City Hall. Multiple non-profits claiming to work on the problems of homelessness, housing, drugs, etc. have been caught embezzling money from the City. Also how the police Union - which has a long history going back to the 1920s - continues to play out in the lack of enforcement. Now with APEC in town they totally cleaned up / shuffled downtown. Ironic as Xi Jingpeng and Biden are gonna be 100 ft from that block.
Hudson Clark
killer content, keep dem ears on tha ground

you the only respectable news coverage of whatâs really goin on in the city. shouts out andrew and the crew!
Gavin510
great series so far, it really captures what is going on in sf. I think people not from the bay only see the viral clips from the first episode. Adding the context of why a lot of this is happening like how fentanyl is being sold, big tech, gentrification, etc helps people understand. could be good to showcase how neighborhoods like nob hill which is like 5 blocks from the tenderloin, have no homeless people. fuck big tech, big Pharma and the NIMBYs in the bay who complain about the homeless but never do shit to help. also shout out mario0o0o0o
mike condon
i wish i could give better feedback, the 15 minutes flew by i'm into it. i think the little segment offshoots add much needed context, keep adding stuff like that as needed- you're able to do it channel 5's way so it works. dont worry about length. makes me glad i'm in seattle even living on 4th and Jackson during the pandemic wasn't like this footage. ps you missed a couple frames of eyeball still.

đ A little bit of history about the tenderloin would definitely add to the series. I would be interested in knowing what the families of the Hondurans did before coming to San Francisco. I wonder how much climate change/loss of drug farms play a part in becoming mules etc.
Dillon James
Best one yet. Compelling stories and honestly doing some of the best journalism out there rn. Canât wait to see Central American episode thatâs brave!!
Nacho
Real news, real journalism. Thank you.
Channel 5
Hell ya thank you for the feedback on previous cuts. I also want to add a bit about the history of the Tenderloin (where this is filmed) so people understand that weâre only filming in a small radius. A ton of other parts of the city, like North Beach and Noe Valley, have adequate policing and no tents
Moriah
The edit turned out great đ¤ easily my favorite video since Channel 5 returned. Stoked for the rest of the series and for Latin America content
