All fun and games ‘till…

Hunter Bass

Will there ever be a part 4 to the Ocean City Nights video?

Sebastian

Thank you for doing this. I went through Dare in 6th grade. I don’t have a negative nor positive experience about Dare. I’m pretty neutral. I appreciate you always digging deep into the history. I knew about Gates BUT not how Dare was funded. I’m really really troubled by that history and I’m really glad you put it out there. It really changes my whole perspective. That being said. I liked that you didn’t demonize anyone. I can demonize Gates on own for things not even related to this series. But there are people who are in Dare with good intentions. The president of Dare seemed pretty transparent to me. I may not agree with all his positions but I understand that it’s his perspective. Also Retro Bill I believe his anecdotes. He seemed genuinely. The summation of his point at the end about impacting just one person positively can create a positive web of influence. Thanks again.

JG

Where can I get retro bills shirt?

Daniel Lovett

A few thoughts: the description of the "new" dare activities sound pretty similar to what I did as a kid. We acted out how to "say no" and were basically coached on what to say. Not to hard to say no when you're being told to say no... Second, it's pretty telling that while Retro Bill is spending so much energy defending himself and explaining why he's so important and has changed so many lives, your journalism teacher is shrugging off the credit you're giving him. Third, I know you're trying to be nonconfrontational and find common ground (and I support that), but I can't help but wonder what some of their responses would be if you challenged them on topics like the economic causes of drug use or how they're contributing to generational trauma by feeding the prison pipeline. Fourth, Pegueros' rhetoric between 19:30 and 20:15 is troubling to me because it suggests he believes users are lost causes and that there's no possibility of recovery from addiction. A case could be made that the DARE curriculum increases the shame of users down the line and adds a barrier to them quitting. Why wouldn't you want to teach kids that they can overcome problems? Once again, that seems like it's contributing to the cycle.

Eros Arm

retro bill saved my life as well <3

BlankStare

i wish yall would have edited sound effects for all of Bill's hand movments haha. Keep the dream alive

Kyle O'Keefe

watching Retro Bill make up stories was a tough watch, cant lie

katrina

Honestly, I was very against dare until time stamp 1747… When the guy talks about the new dare being about choices and actually a lot more complex than the old one… Definitely that guy even though he looked like he was gonna say a bunch of old fashioned stuff was really intelligent and open minded and I was surprised how listening to him talk about everything he didn’t seem super extreme. Maybe the new DARE will be a good thing although the idea of being able to take kids directly from school to jail is messed up, but it sounds like they are growing and changing the program. Maybe that won’t be part of it. As always, great work, I sometimes miss the funny videos though. I really liked getting my news with a spoonful of Sugar. It’s like watching John Oliver or Saturday night live. It makes all the bad things in the world a little bit better if you can laugh at them, I feel like you lost that after you had some sort of bad allegations and were on HBO. I think you pivoted to trying to make the world a better place and shine light on more serious issues and I think that that’s important but you can also laugh at things while still taking them seriously if that makes sense? It’s like we’re all gonna die so you might as well laugh a little bit on the way. Anyway, I miss some of the old funny way of doing that content, and I wish there was more of a mix of comedy… retro bill snapping definitely reminded me of some of the quirky characters that you met. I think your channel could be educational, impactful , but still funny still. 👍👌❤️🙏 i’m not sure if you pivoted to being really serious right after those. Allegations as kind of a way to make up for them by making the world a better place instead of just doing comedy but I think that there is a middle ground and a lot of your supporters. They’ve been here from the beginning liked that aspect I’m loving the new Content too and I’ve learned a lot about issues that I normally wouldn’t have -but I just miss some of the comedic release as well. ❤️

Daniel Bock

Teacher here. I felt those same feelings!

Randellino

Man we all know retro bill is doing wild stuff off camera

ImaFool4Gabbagool

Retro Bill a wild boy lmao

Ben

Great series! I would love to hear you talk more about HPPD if you’re comfortable with it!

Willow Pauly

tbh these documentaries are getting better and better man, keep it up

Carrie Helmer

The *sigh* sound effect after marijuana is so real 😮‍💨🍃

Travis Bridges

Retro Bill is based

Lauren Dorey

Teared up at the end of this. I'm a teacher and everyday I try my best to be a role model for my students but sometimes I feel like garbage. This made me feel good.

Chicoism

so ok...the old guy president wasn't entirely wrong in his answers. you can clearly see wisdom in the responses (regardless of factual information) that makes you stop and think...even just a little bit...in the reason why DARE exists. my favorite part is when he says "evidently" in response to Andrew because it means that the truth presented has convinced him of something. It doesn't have to be the entire truth, but ultimately, he is willing to change his viewpoint based on presented evidence.

Matt Gray

Maybe not as evil as I always thought but STILL A BUNCHA CITCHES ON HOOOOD

Chris

Bruh the main face of dare; the guy who looks like Elvis. (im not sure his real name) is actually tripping with the whole anti graffiti and anti sticker on public property thing. Graffiti I can somewhat get behind especially if it hinders the comprehension of said sign/building or is derogatory and or disgusting to the viewer. However, it is literally beautifying these plain, mundane concrete structures and giving them life. The DMV area specifically the downtown DC area is riddled with different graffiti literally fucking everywhere and its beautiful it tells a story and almost works as a medium for you to be immersed in the city, the culture, the struggles and the people there. Like you'll see somebody's tag and just be amazed thinking about how much work it must have taken to make that art on the top side of a literal bridge In the middle of the Potomac for example. It's a huge part of many cities and other communities and without it they just wouldn't be the same. I literally love the idea of stickers and graffiti adorning every boring piece of architecture the city has to offer. Plus if you had them paint it they'd proposition that the citizens pay through taxes or some bs

Grace Kugler

Bill being from SLO makes so much sense lmao

J

Holy shit

Andrew Arnold

I wish bill didn’t snap so much kind of wants to make me snap on him

D Masters

I checked the comments for this 😂 , and it's basically every comment 🤣

clean_static

Some say Retro Bill is still snapping to this day.

moon_language

I fully believed Retro Bill was gonna break out into a freestyle rap at any moment but I guess his whole shtick meets the criteria anyhow

timothy kitchen

That ending. 👌

i think this really would connect with the privatization of incarceration...in particular the kidnapping of children for "behavioral treatment programs" but basically incarcerating children and teenagers.

Sneaky Blunders

My pedo-senses are tingling...

He'd make a better clown 🤡 tbf

Marc Piechowicz

Shame he hasn't got a damn clue he's a laughing stock to all the kids who might actually need help...

Marc Piechowicz

Pretty sure so called Retro-Bill is a crack addict 😳

Marc Piechowicz

I'm really struggling with believing a damn word of so called 'Retro-Bill' 😕

Murph

Tbh Retro Bill in my dream blunt rotation. Good series

Curtis Maggard

A lot of these folks really mean well. But unfortunately, when you are uninformed, the actions of your good intentions can do a lot of harm.

Dan

Yo retro bill. Love the man, he seems like a genuine dude, who really wants to help.

Marshall Bender

Amazing ending… Retro Bill spitting some facts

jackson gomez-rose

Going to manifest this interview

jackson gomez-rose

DUUUDE an interview of Andrew on PBD podcast valuetianment would FUCK so hard

Val

Really liked the ending segment because it really resonates with the way you present these issues. These videos give such a good change in perspective (usually of both sides of an issue) that it allows for many of us to reevaluate and possibly change the course of our lives by how we think about things. I know at the very least you've helped me be more open minded about a lot of topics and that's helped me in a lot of ways. Thanks again for the great work on yet another great piece!

Owari YF

14 secs in "im a former 26 year veteran of the LAPD" sounds about right lmfao

Clownfucker3000

tfw retro bill shows up

RD

I know right! I couldn’t believe I was hearing that from the President of DARE. The self awareness is so refreshing and gives them credibility

Tyler

The cuts, the music, the b-roll, the camera zooms, the questions, the story telling… the editing and the final product is always phenomenal. Great work, looking forward to more

chipz

that ending goes incredibly hard

Hermington

I think this was the best part of the entire series although the rest were still good. It’s refreshing to see how the program has reinvented itself.

Andy

goosebumps bro

LlamaVomit

Maybe, but I think it’s because a man cares about children and is trying to do what he believes can change young people’s lives. Any man around children raises red flags because of past sins from pieces of shit. I’m not ready to get rid of bias of men around children, but I’m aware of my prejudices.

David Caprara

As a journalist always trying to film interviews in hotel rooms to make them not look like hotel rooms your hotel room framing blew my mind. You guys are doing great things. Keep it up.

Joe Garro

Was amazed, but very pleased he brought up Iran-Contra.

Joe Garro

Agreed. He seemed genuine and articulate on top of it, reasoned in his approach.

Joe Garro

Dr. Hart is the man!

Joe Garro

It seems that the complex interplay between law enforcement, policy, and societal perceptions, particularly regarding the War on Drugs, is often overlooked. This issue is not just about the prohibition of substances but also about who benefits from this prohibition. The military-industrial complex, along with law enforcement agencies, has significant interests in maintaining the status quo due to the financial and power structures it upholds. Arguably, a more effective approach to dismantle the power of cartels and enhance public safety would be to implement full legalization and ensure safe access to substances. This strategy not only addresses the issue of safety but also challenges the economic benefits that currently motivate the maintenance of prohibition. The lobbying power held by those profiting from the current system is a significant barrier to change, highlighting the complexity of the issue at hand.

Joe Garro

Nailed what I was feeling, and yet could not pin down nor say to myself.

Joe Garro

I get some serious pedo vibes.

Joe Garro

Major props for the older D.A.R.E. gentleman's acknowledgement of Reagan and the CIA importing drugs at the same time. Also, as much as I hated D.A.R.E. as a kid, I also give them props for actually changing their curriculum and approach. Great work as always, Andrew.

SirLongButt

Retro Bill is such an odd man

Anna

Came to say the same thing. Incredible amount of subtext in that little clip it’s perfect lol

Louis Dickson

That interview with Retro Bill and the president of DARE was amazing!!! This is the journalism that’s needed, great god damn work

Aaron Parks

I thought this last segment was the most important of the three, but I've been enjoying all of it and it's hard to say what to cut, if anything.

James Sheppard

POV: nightmare blunt rotation

BelligerentWeasel

Peguero really does make a good point. 80,000+ people a year will never be able to break their addiction to opioids because it kills them.

Joseph Wells

Shout out calvin shaw 🙌 👏

jacob

I didn’t like Retro Bill at first but god damn does he know how to speak. I damn near also choked up in that interview.

Jacob Morrison

retro bills doppelgänger is robbie rotten

Malcolm Reynolds

Wow Retro Bill is just beyond humble.

Garrett Bibb

Damn, I’m sorry that was your experience. It’s crazy how against the big book that philosophy is. I live in a city where most people in the rooms are adamant about not sharing what their higher power is, cause at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. Unfortunately, 12 step recovery varies wildly from city to city, so you’re kind of stuck with whatever philosophy your local town’s meetings subscribe to

Miki

A quick Dennis & Charlie reference perfectly signifies what happens when things are driven by casual conversation. Another moving ending.

nico bredenbeck

that odd future mall footage. great video as always

ThugDaddy

Retro Bill really fucks with Retro Bill

Haunted Vault

I feel like Retro Bill is just trying to convince himself and everyone around him that the last 30 years weren't a total waste...

MO Y

Retro Bill has a good Heart

Mike Nichols

Lol the super quick Always Sunny "The Gang Runs for Office" clip when listing the names of the politicians

Stephen Schlager

I enjoyed this video series a TON as we always do in my life. My wife, friends, and other family members all watch your stuff and appreciate your committed approach to storytelling. I grew up in a City called Beavercreek and it is in the 10 best places to live according to some sources. I didn't have that experience growing up here due to several reasons. After my exposure to the DARE program in my elementary school years (really making a big impact in 5th grade) I found myself smoking tobacco in middle school. I do believe my exposure to smoking, and drinking being the "forbidden fruit" caused an outcast that just wanted to fit in like me to make questionable health choices regarding substance. I got lucky to not be addicted and to have friends/family that kept me honest and clean when things got tough. I don't believe this program does anything good for our community. something similar would be good, and maybe the changes they made have correctly adjusted the program. For me, I'll never know if the changes work, and pray that my Son does better than I did all those years ago with the choices given to him.

Dick

hitting my dealer rn and picking up a ball of blow

Amie Ć

Maybe it’s because I’ve only been to treatment in Louisiana, but even if you go to treatment, so many recovery centers use the 12 steps as a method of spreading religion. “God as we understood him” is a great idea in AA, but when added with the pressure to get through the steps plus being told however we understood God during addiction was wrong, it’s really difficult to avoid falling into a church. My addiction counselor told me doing tarot opens portals for demons lmao very serious guy

Sidney Phillips

This shit dam near almost made me cry shout out retro bill

Ominent

People that haven't been found guilty of a crime tend not to get punished, weird huh?

Daniel Robert Blackburn

Its tough because I am sure that Retro Bill has seen first hand the Dare program ruin lives too if a child opens up about drugs in their house and then police get involved and mess up the lives of the parents and kids for non-destructive behavior like smoking some weed every once in a while. Idk just conflicted, great video.

Andrew Matson

The finger snapping is too much. Nice work recognizing your teacher Andrew......thank god I am too old to have been exposed to Retro Bill in the past.

NDR924

👌👌👌

NDR924

It was helpful, thanks 😄

Madi Young

Retro Bill has “took one hypnotism class and now he thinks he has extraordinary influential ability” vibes

TudsonsToomer

Retro Bill genuinely wholesome. Superhero music goes epic. Thank you again for the consistent homeruns guys

Hamish

you can tell retro bill has some dark secrets going on... projecting lol

Hi Robocop plot

Chris Carter

@21:55 What a strange coincidence that retro bill wears the same shirt as Ricky in Trailer Park Boys. Wow, that blows my mind.. Am I wrong or is that a divine comedy moment?

Patrick C

Both of those guys have good intentions, but the underlying motivation behind the "war on drugs" is, and always has been, to preserve and maintain white supremacy. White people use drugs at a much higher % than any other race) and receive the lightest punishments by the criminal justice system. Even in the way drugs are talked about in the media (poor white people addicted to opioids suffer from a disease and need treatment whereas inner city black people who smoke crack deserve life in prison or worse), is such a blatant double standard, even to this day! Its fucking bullshit.

Katherine Zimmerman

Sorry, I just was trying to be helpful by providing some info about it—I also have HPPD👍

Jose David Vargas

Those snaps at the end doeee

Spencer Baumruk

Loved the positive message at the end about how impactful one person or role model can be, whether it's a Retro Bill or a Calvin Shaw, or Andrew Callaghan for surely many viewers. Also had HPPD in the past, looking forward to hearing more about Andrew's experience on Lex's show

The Ders

Who was all smoking while watching this?

SilverClaw RunningRiver

No it did not help. I only want to hear Andrew's expirience about it and to interview Darryl Anka one day.

Katherine Zimmerman

Thank you for sharing your experience with Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder. I also have HPPD after using marijuana when I was 15. Now, I study psychology at university to help learn more about these drugs :)

Katherine Zimmerman

it's called Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder and it happens when you take a hallucinogen drug—while there are certain genetic and environmental vulnerabilities, it's a rare disorder. Although ANY hallucinogen drug can warrant the development of symptoms, the phenomenon of HPPD is primarily seen after LSD use. What happens when you have the disorder is the re-experiencing, when the individual is sober, of the perceptual disturbances that were experienced while the individual was intoxicated with the hallucinogen. It has also been recorded as a condition that can cause significant distress or impairment in the social, occupational, or other important areas of one's life. Hope this helped <3

Mark Nevala

Just gonna say Retro Bill is fine. Not sure why people don't like him. He's just a guy doing his thing.

Dylan

i can not stand the snapping retro bill does LOL

SilverClaw RunningRiver

Super rad. Hey man, interview Darryl Anka some time, the guy that channels the E.T Bashar. His advice is way better than anything DARE or other sources have to offer. His advice is 100% based on Science and Physics. Allot of scientists secretly consult him in private session

Channel 5

I’ll be talking about it on Lex fridman tomoro 🫡

SilverClaw RunningRiver

Hey Andrew, can you talk more about your mushroom induced disorder? What happened and how much did you take? how does it affect you

Renato Jones

omg, chills, tears, LOVED your story about Calvin and came around to like Retro Bill for where his heart's at

Retro Bill is clearly living in the glory days. He wants to stay relevant. Hang up the jacket bud, your shtick is over lol.

Floodo1

d00d is a straight weirdo

Floodo1

he convinced me so stop generalizing

Floodo1

Retro Bill doesn’t realize slave owners could make the same argument to justify the “success” of slavery: “I’ve have slaves come up to me and say thank you for teaching me discipline and for providing for my family”

Channel 5

I wondered if there was any taggers up in here lol

Jacob Farmos

@13:34 he makes a good point

Jake G

Retro Bill is bitch made

Amazing eye opening work!

tiredhungrylosers

fuck the buff

Willyam Arcand

Retro Bill is quite the character. I guess we should send another billion to the D.A.R.E. program because some girl with green and purple hair said so.

Max

Are you asking if the two things in quotes are the same thing? Or asking if government and community oversight are the same thing? In both cases, no I don't believe they are the same thing. I think the option of having a non-governmental organization doing DARE type stuff but while under the review and watchful eye of communities, rather than the government, is possible (it's like the attempts of community oversight in terms of policing, the need for this implying community oversight is not inherent in government). The government could be the watchdogs, however that would just go back to the root problem of us spending tax payer dollars on some potentially useless organization. I tried clarifying what I was saying, but dunno if I succeeded haha. Thanks for the question

Danté Vasser

concerning cigarettes.. honestly anything lmao it’s like,, exposing someone to something and telling them not to do it will never work 😭

Alexander Reynolds

Lots of the "fentanyl" is actually higher potency analogues from Chinese or Indian chemists. It also suffers from the same reasons that liquor became so much more popular during prohibition - if you're rum-running, you'll maximize your profit if you have more concentrated product. Legalization seems like the best solution, especially in a market economy.

james asher

Oh my god who was that police officer smoking the blunt, I need to find her Instagram fr

Alexander Reynolds

Yeah, I think there's just a fundamental need for someone to talk to the damn kids. In this case, it's DARE, but I wish we didn't need to package it in this anti-drug propaganda. At the end of the days it's all a symptom of poverty - not the cause.

Alexander Reynolds

Yeah, the president or w/e straight-up like "(the government) selling crack to freeway Ricky Ross is an unfortunate reality". This where great interviewing comes in and gets people comfortable. People (and their viewpoints) can be pretty complicated and not necessarily what we expect.

Woody

Okay retro bill lemme see you hit wicket or tall hand

Shane Webster

I consider myself very hard to sway but always open to new ideas (so long as they are comprehendible). I am confident in my biases because I like to think I got it all figured out. Man. you just opened my eyes. Andrew, dude. You are really good at what you do. Impartial, fair and balanced is the only way to get to the heart of any matter. I feel stupid for going into this episode hating on DARE. I also feel stupid for appreciating them for a single a second. Then that last bit with Retro Bill... Like, fuck. How can I stay biased after that.

Key

Thanks for taking the time to read it. Cheers 🍻

Alfy Penny

Did you pay for the Patreon just to come and tell everyone something we already knew?

Dylan Stewart

How can he convince anyone he's changed other than by continuing to live his life, even in a spotlight, but just not have any more allegations? He made a video taking accountibility and apologizing then took some time for therapy and shit, then got back to what he loved, that's how it should be handled imo

Shaun Cheah

Absolutely based reply, thanks for taking time to type it all out. I was buying into the copaganda a bit (it's so easy to do), so getting a fresh slap of reality was much-needed, I feel. Cheers. 🍻

Ryan Todd

Tyler LeBlanc

Gettin cheeks is bad?

tatffs

the snapping at the end was the creepiest thing i’ve ever seen i can’t

Alexander Contreras

Also that story was great at the end and I thought it was well done!

Alexander Contreras

Been waiting 2 weeks for this vidya! Woohoo!

Conrad Wiebe

You said make it have "no cops or state employees" but also have "government or community oversight". Aren't those two options the same thing? Community oversight is the thing that makes a government different than a private corporation.

Conrad Wiebe

90% sure Retro Bill is making up people just to say he saved their lives.

Dowo2987

guys I know most of you really don't want to hear this, but Andrew did some really bad things in the past (he even basically admitted to it in his "apology"), and he has not done anything to convince anyone he has changed really, he just kinda went away for a few months, probably hoping that people would just forget about it. You can easily find this stuff by just searching his name, go and make your own opinion, but I think you should know about this.

jason

Regardless of what you think about the program or Retro Bill, you covered this with excellence.

Key

Sure, I agree with you Shaun. I’m not saying he shouldn’t do it, or that it isn’t a form of expression. I will say that it comes off as a desperate attempt to cling to youth and memories of fame. Kind of like Madonna. He’s got a net worth of 1.5 million. He likely doesn’t need the money from D.A.R.E, and is probably passionate (although misguided) about their mission. I have no issue with his aesthetic choices, but supporting and promoting an organization that is so quick to arrest young children in the middle of a school day and ruin their lives forever for something that should be handled by our educational system? I can’t stand by that. His paycheck, and all of D.A.R.E’s funding, should go directly to our broken schools so that the underlying issues causing underage drug use can be remedied. Teachers and administrators are already underpaid, and this is more taxpayer money out of their pockets and in the hands of the police. So yeah, I’ll make fun of his silly eyebrows, just as he perpetuates the prison-industrial complex by telling kids to narc on their friends.

SpalonaPlastelina/BurntPlasticine

3:10 video source?

hoopoebird

Ngl Retro Bill seems full of shit. Shoutout to your old teacher Mr. Shaw. It's people like that who are willing to get to know kids and meet them where they are at who make a difference. Crazy how D.A.R.E. is funded in such a sketchy way- meanwhile your teacher is probably still having to pay for a lot of his own supplies.

Levi

If dare would stop trying to be so corny, and admit that stuff like weed and shrooms are seeing positive use, arent as even dangerous as alcohol, and they should wait until adulthood to make informed decisions, kids would actually listen and focus on the harder drugs as issues

travis scarton

Retro Bill a bitch.

Man, I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm getting strong pedo vibes from Retro Bill. 😬 Could be because I just watched Quiet On Set though

Sam Goldberg

Would love a piece that explores the final gasp of public education. There's so much going on but there are major cities that already have been completely privatized and it seems like that will be the future for the entire country. So many people (myself included) have a strong distaste for the outdated methods and counterproductive elements of american schools. By nature, they are built on "the great lie" of a fair chance for all but we know that not to be true. But because they are so hated by the general public, theyve been gutted by the govt, no one really reports on this and when its gone too far (it already has) we will be left with total top down nationwide brainwashing

Swampy

I think he’s method acting Elvis. High as fuck slammin peanut butter and fluff sandwiches and campaigning against drugs. Dude better watch out cause his idle died of constipation

Swampy

Dude looks like he’s flying too close to the sun with the Elvis shtick

Swampy

Billy got yay

Maximilian Wachter

Congrats man, great to hear. The best to you and your old man.

Taylor

NGL I'm in my early twenties, but I live in a rural area. So I remember dare came to my school when I was in like first grade. I remember that through dare I realized my Dad did drugs. I have no idea if that helped me buuuuut I don't do those drugs. P.s. Happy ending, my Dad is now 2 years sober off opiates. Visited him last year, first time in my life seeing him sober. It was like a completely different person.

Shaun Cheah

We don't have to be who we are; it is within us to choose to be who we want to be, too. Retro Bill wants to be an Elvis caricature, and I say good for him. His body, his choice and all that.

Shaun Cheah

Kinda sucks that it's all wrapped up in anti-drug stuff, but clearly bringing positive messaging to children's lives is a worthwhile endeavour. I'm not super jazzed about why and how it ended up happening, but I am glad that hurt kids were able to take away something good through Retro Bill and people like him doing some good in a very flawed system.

Michael Justice

Thanks for the clarification. I knew something was off there. I just hadn't heard that word very often.

Ward Larson

Retro bill the Jeffrey Epstein of drug prevention

Retro Bill doesn't need drugs, the dude is drugs

zach l

if retro bill is lying to anybody, its himself

zach l

When i was just a wee lad at the age of 12, retro bill came to my school. his eccentric hand gestures and bouncing pompadour haircut helped me realize all the great things that life had to offer, and that i was missing out! If it wasnt for retro bill and his drug education presentations, i never wouldve discovered cocaine at the age of 15. Thanks retro bill!!!

Max

This all could have been harmless and more beneficial if done differently. I'd be curious to see what harm was caused by D.A.R.E. but this newer form seems less 'scared straight' despite awarding the typical drug-hypocritical cops. That said, some people seem to mean well. I remember DARE as a kid but don't remember if it was mandatory of if parents could opt kids out kind of like some christian programs in elementary school. If DARE were privately funded (I realize they were here, but I mean no cops or state employees), had government or community oversight of what they were teaching, and allowed an opt-out option for parents, then at worst it would be useless but citizens didn't waste their money. Perhaps even a few anecdotal situations can be improved as an outcome! At best the socio-economic situations leading to drug use and violence is eradicated haha. Obviously with the recorded effectiveness of the program, despite anecdotes, none of 'our' resources should go into it.

Christian

Surprisingly one of the best series I've ever watched being a fan all the way back to no gas no brakes this was a amazing video and once again Andrew and team thank you for your amazing work

Ballceratops

Retro Bill is a strange fellow but I think he means well. I went through DARE and I have no recollection of him. I would for sure remember the snapping..

Sacha Devoretz

It's a very good series Andrew. I grew up during the 80's in Canada. We didn't have this program, but in high school we had people come in and give talks to the students about drugs. The talks were usually from people who had been harmed by drugs or drinking too much. I remember these type of presentations having some impact on the students because we heard real life experiences about how alcohol or drugs had hurt them. Having said that, we smoked a lot of weed, drank and students did other drugs, but the students did seem aware of the risks.

John Hansen

I was thinking the same thing when he was telling the story of the girl at the restaurant. No fuckin waaaay that happened lol

Luke Christensen

Great work, another complicated issue covered skillfully. It’s interesting to me the reluctance in using recovering addicts as voices for the program. I find that to be a bit ill informed. I think one aspect of this coverage that you touched on that is really important is just the fact that drug use is still highly stigmatized. Abstinence is not the only successful outcome for kids, and prohibition never worked well. Great work, big fan.

TK

I wish there were more time with Pegueros: the evolution of the program sounds like they are focusing on the psychology of drug use. Also curious what he may think about legalization as a way to combat the black market and allow for better education: e.g. marijuana.

Izzy Collier

Retro bill is such a fascinating character, as are all those you interviewed

Damien Ostler

RETROBILL AND CRIPMAC CROSSOVER WOULD BE AMAZING

Michael Justice

Great video once again, showing as many sides to the story as you can. There was my friends dad who always was supportive and always talked about music, and share suggestions with me and listen to me and my friends jam. Also when he said dare officers now change every time they give a speech and adapt to the situation. At least their on the right track, because just like jazz music, you can't blanket every situation with a band aid. You have to change with the world that you're in and treat people individually/and as a group at the same time.

Brandon Van Over

You should ask retro bill for the contact info of these people whose lives he has changed. I get a weird feeling he is a compulsive liar.

Key

Joking aside, another great series!

DW

Amazing sound editing on the Retro Bill testimonial! Felt like a Chris Nolan film. Shout-out to Calvin Shaw! 🫰

Key

it's amazing *snap* that he's *snap snap* been doing this *snap* for 25 years *snap snap snap* and yet *snap* still can't seem to *snap snap* generate rhythm *snap snap snap* using only speech *snap*

Mike H.

outro is so good.

Key

Does it seem odd that "retro bill" preaches loving yourself unconditionally but so obviously dyes not only his hair, but also his fucking eyebrows?

Justin Baldinger

Sick episode, this was my favorite in the series. It’d be cool if you did an episode/series on your career/growth as a journalist. You’ve mentioned it a handful of times recently and it’s always interesting hearing tidbits, but I’m sure you have more to say about it.

Braedan Hall

i came away further enraged by big pharma, capitalistic healthcare, segregation, and red lining which is a good sign, seeing as those are the deeper, more important issues lying underneath all this

DW

We need a Crip Mac x Retro Bill mashup! Not sure when Trevor is getting out, maybe bring Bill along on visitors day

Braedan Hall

my favorite part of the series is how you’re able to show the people on each side that are highly motivated to stop the worst parts of the effects drugs have on kids and our society. i appreciate seeing their opinions on why/why not dare, but i really love when you can tell how hard these comparatively small people are attempting to solve a systemic issue. regardless of your belief on their chosen solution, at least they are looking at (some) facts and doing (some) things about it

Aiden Krech

Retro Bill has insane ego issues or something

Michael Justice

When retro bill said "Orally" while pointing to his ears I lost it.

Braedan Hall

would love to hear these guys’ response to the cold hard facts of big pharma + the organized pushing of drugs to minorities. they are obviously rational and want to address the problem, just not sure they understand the actual issue…thanks for the series AC!!

Seth vrba

Retro bill at the end put it in to perspective for me similar to the Vegas video. I think at the end of the day he means well and dare cause some good for those who really want to help others and not just trying to tell kids not to do drugs in 6th grade 10 times in the semester

Miriam Trott

I need to know the story behind Retro Bill falling out of the tree.

Jorre

Great interview with the D.A.R.E. President, a very well formulated man that just tries to do good for the kids. I would have liked to have heared his opinion on prescription pills and how big pharma influences the popularity of fentanyl. That’s where most of the drug abuse comes from if we can believe the San Francisco and Las Vegas videos. Further than that, loved the series.

Riley Martin

Listening to these people can be very frustrating. I strongly advise Andrew and the team to read drug use for adults by Carl hart and reach out to the acclaimed Columbia staff

Seth vrba

I do agree with him when he mentioned that there needed to be follow ups in further education. I know I wasn’t thinking about drugs in 6th grade but by 8th grade/ high school many people started smoking weed including myself

Justin Smith

Fuck Reto Bill. Dude is so creepy and I couldn’t imagine him being near any kids. And fuck Dare and the war on drugs. It’s 2024 and this the best they can come up with?

Cody C

gonna start doing the snaps move next time I argue with my girl

Calum Larkin

Surprisingly wholesome!

Owen Degen

Really beautiful dude, I can't express it, but these are really nice. I appreciate your effort, thank you.

Sam

Jokes aside, amazing series I loved it

Sam

Retro bill is definitely a lizard person. He’s trying to hypnotize us with his snapping

WizardCactus

Retro Bill’s ego is wild

Anthony Piazza

Great series and overall great content.

Matt Miller

How is retro bill allowed to be near a school

polymorphic shade

Sad knowing $700+ million per year funded the complete destruction of so many lives, especially black teens...

Russell Clark

Retro boy v weird

mjkah

I def think at least the 2nd and last parts for sure. the first is great for anyone who doesn’t know what it is but the most intriguing were def the 2nd and last part.
