After my car was stolen from my driveway I felt very violated. The thieves left personal belongings in the car went through my belongings in the trunk and took what they wanted. It felt surreal that not 20 feet from where I slept someone was able to take my property and face no charges. $6,000 of damage is a lot for a low income family with rent to pay.

Publicity is addicting. I’M PISSED that I work so hard for years to pay off a vehicle, and before I can pay it off, it gets jacked by some kid who just wants to take it for a joy ride. Even with insurance I had to pay out of pocket for things when my car got stolen, and now my car payment is twice as much as it was because I HAD to get a new car.

I've always struggled to articulate this idea because you never want to blame victims for what happens to them, but this specific situation helps to illustrate a dynamic common to almost any problem in society. Where there are security vulnerabilities, there will always be some shitheads ready and willing to exploit them for personal gain. Hyundai and Kia both have responsibility for creating a vulnerable product and taking so long to correct the issue, and debatably still not addressing it with the proper level of severity. These kids are absolutely shitheads and if it weren't easy to steal cars they'd find some other well to shit into, but that's another issue altogether. If we as a society provided better resources and structure to these kids, and helped develop empathy early on in their development, they might be less inclined to go out and ruin someone else's day. We can just say they are shitheads and lock them up when we catch them but that doesn't stop more from being shitheads in the future. If we really wanted this kind of behavior to stop, we would address the root causes which are more often than not going to be lack of resources and lack of positive structure and influences in their lives.

Yeah fuck these kids. I had my rental car stolen in Denver and even though I had rental coverage and personal car insurance, the company tried to bill me $1100 for damages not covered. It took me months fighting them on how much I should pay for having my car stolen. Also missed my flight and had to reschedule, then missed work too as a result. My friend that delivers pizza had his car stolen by some kids that crashed it 2 blocks away. They used his credit cards at the nearest corner store. He was out of work for weeks until he got it fixed. They found one of the kid's mother and she begged for him to drop charges if she paid the damages. Then she never paid. It's not about identifying with your car. Take away someone's means to work even for a few days, and there's so many people living paycheck to paycheck that can't afford to just wait for insurance to help. Theft coverage (comprehensive) is not required in NY or CT. Kias are budget cars for people not trying to spend a lot of money, so how many of them have full coverage?

I like this series. It's something I've heard a lot about but don't really know much about. I don't think everything Channel 5 reports on needs to have an agenda to push change. In certain situations, like documenting homelessness, yes, action should be part of the mission to avoid gawking and taking advantage--making money off homeless porn. This ain't that. This feels like it's showing a side that we wouldn't see on TV which is what I think gonzo is all about.

I had my Kia broken into last July. I got the anti-theft update in June, so the thief was not successful. Insurance covered everything. However... because there are so many Kia's being broken into across the US, there is a significant shortage on windows for these vehicles. It took my local dealership a whole two months to get a window for my car and two months for me to get my car back. On top of the stress that's covered in this video, I do quite a bit of driving for work and can't do my job without a car. Long-story short, the whole process was a nightmare even with insurance covering everything. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that my car was broken into in the middle of the night in a well-illuminated parking space right in front of my apartment building. I'm now paying around $150 a month for a garage just so I don't have to deal with this nonsense again.
