Unfortunately, it's not even their fault. Obviously there's always the opportunity to change your beliefs, but views like this tend to very quickly become irrevocably bound to your actual wellbeing. I wouldn't be able to fully articulate the idea concretely in a comment I spent a minute writing, but reductively, you can either die with the lie or live with the consequences, and when you owe millions of dollars to the IRS, it probably doesn't feel very feasible to live with the consequences.
