The T'au may initially appear rad and a cool empire to live in, T'au society's extreme caste system demands that all conform to the will of The Ethereals and The Greater Good, with your life determined the moment you pop out based on the caste you were assigned to. Additionally, The Ethereals have ensured that T'au belonging to separate castes can't reproduce across different castes, leading to a directed evolution for T'au to only be capable of existing in one caste: air caste members possess hollow bones and atrophied bodies, making it impossible to wear fire caste armor for example. Any efforts to exist outside of your predetermined life or rebelling against social order leads to pariah status, like what happened to Farsight. Plus the way they've expanded and subsumed other species (Vespids/Kroot), the empire creates a backdrop of fucked up exploitation and specist behavior behind a "No war in Ba Sing Se" propaganda machine.
