Dylan nearly died making this movie, the scene where he's jumping between the moving vehicles, his safety rig failed, he slammed into the side of the cart and ended up going under the car following the cart. He had brain trauma and had to have facial reconstructive surgery. People who witnessed the accident later admitted they thought he'd died.

"I know what's gonna happen! They're gonna find the cure and cure Newt before he dies!!" Oh, my sweet summer child.... 🥺 He was the best character in the books by far. And I know it's been said but his death in the book was SO dark. I knew as soon as I read it that they were going to change it for the movie because there was no way they could have shown it like that. Would have been way too morbid. It's one of the most upsetting things moments in any story I've read.

This movie was probably the one that suffered the most being adapted from the book, there’s actually a lot of technology lost in the transition and this changed how characters died as well as the overall plot. Spoilers for the book: In the book, Teresa got crushed in a collapsing tunnel after she pushed Thomas out of the way which makes much more sense than her failing to jump off of a building. Also Newts death was so much worse in the book since Thomas actually shoots him in the head, pg250 y’all.

Just to add to the sadness that is newt's story. For anyone that hasn't read the prequel books. Ya know the blonde girl from the other maze group? The one with the skinny kid named Aris? Yeah, that's newt's sister. Her name is sonya. But neither of them knew cause of Wicked wiping their memories.

well since newt makes u emotional let me make it worse for u, in the books he has a limp, which u can see the actor incorporate into the first movie when u see newt running, but see the reason for that is in the books newt used to be a runner, but he got depressed seeing there was no way out as they mapped it all out, so he climbed the wall and jumped attempting to kill himself, but doing so his leg got caught on the vines and he injured himself badly instead. alby was the one who dragged him out of the maze before the walls closed.

Just so you know, there is a new Mazda runner movie focusing on Newt (confirmed)! It is not a sequel but more like a reboot of a segment from the story to allow a better newt development. After all these years, I wont say I’m not curious lol

The moment you said Newt was your favorite, my heart broke for you. I read the books and cried so hard, and I thought I would be prepared to watch it, but it was SO MUCH WORSE! I watched this in the theater with my dad and brother when it first came out. I was sobbing so much at the part where Newt dies, my brother actually thought I was in physical pain. And then when Thomas was reading Newt’s letter, I somehow cried even harder. I can’t watch this movie without tears streaming down my face.

Another sad thing about Newt. The blonde woman, Sonya, we met in the 2nd and saw on the campfire in the end, is Newts sister. they didn't remember each other, and Newt only know he had a sister but died without knowing he saw her again.

Thomas Brodie Sangster (Newt's actor) actually sat next to Dylan (Thomas' actor) off screen and read Newt's letter to him. So Thomas (the character)'s reaction to the letter is very genuine because it's Dylan's reaction to it as well.

not so fun fact- dylan obrien actually got seriously injured when shooting the beginning car chase. he got hit by one of the vehicles and dragged under it. ended up taking him 6-ish months to recover, which then pushed production back like a year.
