i love this movie! i didn't know soundtracks of horror movies could be this good! i love how every one of the bad guys has their "normal" moments like oh wait, he/she is just a normal quirky human, or the brother is a douche but basically just a regular guy........and then it switches... 1:02:49 - the only right thing she ever says. You were a little kid. Don't blame yourself for inaction out of fear in childhood, man.

The reason why a lot of people don’t categorize this as a horror movie is because it doesn’t really fit into the genre. Rewatching it with Alex’s commentary actually reinforced that notion for me. It’s just like Shutter Island, which is a psychological thriller. It’s 100% creepy but it doesn’t really induce fear like horror movies do. I’m glad he watched it for sure but a lot of us wanted to see Alex get freaked out like he does with actual horror movies.

Idk if it's been mentioned yet but I love the fact that PICKING COTTON was the way that he escaped captivity. The EXACT reason that black people were KEPT in captivity for so long. 👏 👏 👏

Definitely still think of this as a horror movie and glad you reacted to it. Too many people equate "horror" with creepy creatures/ghosts but horror can be psychological too (I'd also equate stuff like American Psycho or Se7en as horror or at least horror-adjacent). The people who label this a psychological thriller are the same types who try to paint something like Silence of the Lambs as not being horror because it won an Oscar/is too high brow compared to most schlock in the genre IMO.

I like how you caught on with the cereal and milk. Another very subtle thing placed in the movie was her drinking the white milk through a black straw. Inside the straw is white on the outside black. So many Easter eggs.

This movie has an alternative ending where the actual cops show up take the white peoples side and arrest him but they decided on a happier ending. Also the grandpa went into a runners body because like the dad said he never got over losing to a black man. Great reaction! I really loved watching with you. I was having a shit day and this made it so much better!

while not your traditional horror movie, I'd call it a psychological horror movie perhaps. It was good enough to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 2018. I thought it should've won, but it lost to The Shape of Water. Jordan Peele definitely found his calling with this genre, and his two follow-ups to this are fantastic as well.

Jordan Peele movies are refreshingly different for the horror genre plus he started his fame in comedy so the sprinkle of comedic timing are better than most non-comedic movies. I hope we can get his other movies in the upcoming polls
