You don't need to watch The 2016 version to watch the James Gunn film. The first film was bad for the most part as WB made drastic changes to the film after Zack Snyder left and they ruined his plans. David Ayers Suicide Squad was supposed to be continuing Zacks DCEU but they cut so much of that out and reshot a lot. Just like Zack Snyders Justice League cut is a million times better than the theatrical release, Ayers Cut which so far hasn't been given the chance to be released, would be the superior cut if allowed to be released. Watch Zack Snyders Justice League and the 2021 Suicide Squad over the theatrical Justice League and first Suicide Squad.

The 2016 one is truly awful for sure. Between the horrible dialogue, bad pacing and disappointing portrayal of the characters, it's hard to find much to enjoy. I guess you could watch it ironically? Either way, it's shocking to see that it is currently winning in the poll lol. The 2021 movie is actually quite good, mostly because it doesn't take itself so seriously, yet still manages to deliver significantly better storytelling and character developments than the first one. It's definitely worth a watch.

Some of y'all have to realize that (apparently) most of us don't give a shit about the DCU anymore. It's failed and been rebooted so many times that it's not even worth trying to get into. Trying to figure out what's "canon" and what isn't is like trying to figure out the story of Kingdom Hearts by just playing the 3 main console games with your volume and subtitles off! Suicide Squad (2016) was the only "DCU" film I've ever seen, because it was the only time I was actually willing to give it a chance. I agree, the internet kind of sucks sometimes. I personally am in several patreons and the reason I really like Patreon is that the community, in my experience (minus this one), everyone is really nice and caring and they’re considerate (ie not posting spoilers or saying hateful things). They also tend to like a lot of similar content. There have been a few bad apples that start drama, but the creators usually put a stop to it relatively quickly. I understand Alex has a pretty large community and can’t realistically police it 24/7. I can’t decide what I think the age demographic is in here either, but I’d bet it’s predominantly younger people.

The 2016 movie does have some cool moments that I won't spoil here: but it is also one of the most disappointing movies I went to see in theaters. I can definitely see why some people do genuinely enjoy it as for the most part it has a lot of fun action sequences with some surprisingly good emotional beats. But, if it were up to me solely, I would just skip it and watch the infinitely better one, but that's just me being petty. I know that you have to watch the first one to appreciate the second one a little bit more.

2016 ties into Snyder’s DC (Justice League, Birds of Prey) 2021 continues Harley Quinn’s story but ties into James Gunn’s new DCU moving forward (Peacemaker, Creature Commandos). 2021 is obviously much better but if you’re gonna finish the Snyderverse watch both, starting with 2016.

I don’t think it makes much sense not to watch the first one. It mightn’t be as good (I still loved it) but it will also give introduction to characters and their relationships that won’t make as much sense unless you have seen the first one.

Suicide Squad is the first one and The Suicide Squad is the sequel that’s kind of also a reboot at the same time. A re-quel if you will. The extended cut of Suicide Squad is a bit better since the theatrical cut release sucks. Same with Justice League. The Snyder Cut is better than the Whedon Cut
