The GrandMage

Well, if you do cut it, we'd still like to see here what you'd done. You've done a good job of setting up how bad Brian's home life was, but I kind of want to see how was managing to bring himself through that as a fairly well-rounded person and not letting it mess him up.

The GrandMage

I agree, and like the full form. But it really depends on audience and medium. For Lit, yeah, it can be watered down. If, when it's done, you want to try releasing it as an ebook or something, I'd say go back to the full thing. Like here, we're the readers who really like the depth of your writing. Lit, with their rules and what you're doing, it's harder to show everything. But don't forget you've shown us a lot of Emily's personality already. I think any meekness I see is protected by her "frustrated and snarky" side. Although she's definitely just as shy as Brian in that neither of them went for it when they obviously were both interested in each other.

Pretty torn on how much I can trim without really watering down the... you know, the oomph of the moments, the impact. Feeling bullied or alone can sometimes be all in the details and specifics, and if I cut it down TOO much, Emily'll come across as meek and emotional in moments where I intend her to feel more... "frustrated but snarky."

Humorously enough, her visiting his house was the flashback I'm working on now. Maybe I should discard it after all and move on to a different portion.

There are a lot of long stories on Lit that aren't all about sex. I guess it depends on what kind of story you want. Personally, I like stories with depth, no reason a flashback needs to be shorter.

Mike Williams

That is a good point.

Underage teen visiting someone's home is getting closer to the hinting situation. It would be safe to keep it all in public settings, even if it is only 2 characters interacting.

The GrandMage

Depends how you frame it, a paragraph about remembering being back in high school when she met Brian would let you cut out a lot, you could keep the paragraph where she describes her shirt, cut down to talking about sitting behind Lauren, and when mentioning sitting behind her, through in a line or two about how she already made fun of her shirt to try and get in with others, before moving on to Brian. It would cut down the word-count a lot, but might also sacrifice a lot of the emotional set-up she's facing. For just posts on Lit it would work better, especially if you're vague enough with time they could conceivably be legal. Longer versions are good for fans reading here, though.

I actually love the fact that Lauren is caught off guard by the geekiness of Brian tis totally true that that happens in those situations!

Mike Williams

I agree that the piggy back idea is too much. Saving the day by loaning her a shirt sounds good. Maybe she makes returning it to him an excuse to visit his home.
