Yeah I've done guided hunts and land nav when I was in the military, and we still struggled and would get lost if we didn't have a satellite GPS. I couldn't imagine how much harder it'd be if you were panicked and in the dark.

It's sad but true. I've lived in the Black Hills in the US my whole, and one of the things that's hammered into our brains at a young age is to NEVER leave the hiking trails, cause it's so easy to get turned around, especially at night. Even the most experienced rangers and outdoorsy people can get lost. People do it anyway, so there's periodic news about disappearances and rescue missions.

It's so easy to get turned around in a heavily wooded area. Still won't explain why they went up there to begin with but it being dark definitely wouldn't help with tracking your path.
