The number one culprit for ufo's sightings is Venus, the brightest planet. For some too bright.

Only in the last 100 of years telescopes were good enough to see other worlds. Our current universe was subject of the Great Debate in the early 1920s. Only then showed Hubble other galaxies. In 1877 Schiaparelli saw channels on Mars. Around the same time you had Jules Verne and HG Wells. Only then aliens werd something else than angles. Because we could see their worlds in our telescopes.
