I was bracing myself for the tentacle-slug scene, wondering how you could possibly salvage that, but by gosh you pulled it off. But the latter half of the episode... you were not kidding when you talked about "adding a little bit of heart and drama" to the funny stuff during the marathon, because gosh DARN. I especially loved the symmetry of Kirito assuming Sugu got into the game solely to mess with him, just like she thought the same of him several episodes earlier.

The ending was amazing and hit really close to home for me because my sibling and I went through this exact thing. At some point, she started distancing herself (also mostly by only playing video games and ignoring the world around her) and even though we were close as kids, we barely talked as teenagers. I eventually realised that I could get her attention by teasing her and making her angry, so we fell into that dynamic. Obviously not great behaviour on my part either, we were both dumb kids and acting like assholes in the end. So what I am basically trying to say is that the plotline felt very real to me and I could emphasize with Suguha, even though the way she handled the situation was obviously wrong. But hey - they too are just dumb kids. I am really looking forward to seeing how their relationship will develop from this point on.

As someone who peaced out of the stream during the Smartphone section (having assumed that the special was for a new abridged series for a show I don't care for instead of Ep 17), I was pretty conflicted when I bit the bullet to watch it now on patreon (it was my aversion to paying for things that are free later against 10 or so straight hours of hype and a subsequent blue balling.) Glad to say that, even though I'm a little annoyed at the fake-out, the episode was worth the price. I always assumed that you were writing up something big for the Suguha and Kirito reveal in particular and I'm really glad that I was right. I know you all said that you don't see your own work as being superior to the original but I think I can say that, objectively speaking, the conflict between Suguha and Kirito in SAOA is way better than the forbidden romance BS in canon.

I remember reading the manga of smartphone back when it first came out, and dropping it cause it got boring(and not a big fan of harems) but that abridged was the most crackhead thing I’ve seen and so much funnier than the original by far lol XD Also sao17 was just amazing! It was just awesome how you guys reworked a lot of the icky stuff from the original. And I’m not gonna lie, the last scene was very emotional but I kept being reminded that this originally was the scene where she confessed to him and that just made me start laughing lol XD
