I disagree. Sure, it would have been nice to see Jake make a connection with the people we are most interested in, but I'm really happy that William isn't being forgotten about. He is a good character with the potential to be a villainous rival for Jake. Who knows, he could even become a good friend in the long run. Williams story isn't concluded yet, so he can't drift away just yet.

Thanks for the nice Chapter and THANK YOU for not making a Tournament because I just hate these long Tourneys where he gets nothing of use out of them :D those dungeon busting Chapters are way better

Raul klemm de souza

William is a low point in this chapter for sure, is not bad to let some characters drift off.

BrokenMortal

I believe in the author! Every character in this story has a purpose and can't wait find it out. Thx for the chapter

Runaway_Cactuar

Sigh, not him again... While I don't viscerally hate him like many of my fellow readers, I do think that his entire character arc outlived its usefulness to the plot at the end of the tutorial. Once we have established his contrasting foil character to Jake's, he really should've stayed dead. As of now, he brings nothing but bad-guy plot-armor to the story, and is a dead weight to this great setting and plot.

Mr Fuzzknuckle

Yeah, from a story perspective, William makes an excellent "villain-we-all-want-to-see-DEAD". But writing the zero-sum calculations of a sociopath as an empathic writer is hard to do for sure. William is an interesting character that I personally would never forgive, but that's my own morality. I personally can't wait to see what's up with Eversmile though. Especially his comments about karma... I got some serious Desty Nova (Alita) vibes off of him with his karma experiment comments.

An article from the past 1 or 2 month (that I found on Reddit in r/science) found that psychopaths don't lack empathy, they just find it to be too much work or too much of a bother, so they act callously because it's convenient for them. That puts William in a much worse light, and makes the chapters about him not understanding emotion at all be less believable.

RedFaux

I'd argue that if a sociopath gained empathy and understanding of morality, they would effectively be another person entirely. I hope if anyone here has a child that is sociopathic, they do not immediately twist them into what they fear. A child taking apart squirrels is curious as to how they work, not malicious. There are logical arguments as to why it is a bad idea that can and do steer real life sociopaths away from pointless murder

Alnatura

I find it kind of hard to believe that William is just a victim of heaving no empathy and been a sociopath, as if that would make his crimes in any way acceptable. It does not matter in my opinion if he has changed or has the ability to be good in the future. He mass murdered people for no reason, just for fun really, as he believed it would make him stronger or believed the weak have no right to live. I would just blow Williams head of with an arrow from 20km away. Fuck that psychologist and her trying to help William. He s

People don't like William because writing a character and their motivations is really bloody hard when you don't have human empathy to fall back on. Most people on earth base their motivations and goals within the framework of a moral code, and while people without such exist, they are vanishingly rare and often nigh impossible to intrinsically understand, hence very very difficult to get even remotely right. Most 'sociopaths' in media aren't actually sociopaths as they understand the pain of others, often seeking to cause it, hence disqualifying them

If William was a good character, I think many people, me included, would be a bit more inclined to get on the forgiveness train. However, it seemed to me many people didn’t like him as a character to begin with, because sociopaths/lack of emotions often makes writing dull. As a result, many people now dislike him, not only because he’s a mass murderer of non combatants, but because his character has always been bad (opinion, of course). If he had emotions and was more interesting from the start I think he reintroduction would be better received (although it is still likely a vocal minority). To answer your question tho, I personally think no. Mental illness is not an excuse for mass murder, and then being a “different person” does not change the lives they ended, the people they hurt, and the intention they had while planning and performing the acts. The help they do now is great, but they deserve no forgiveness for their past actions. That’s my two cents.

Not many believers in redemption here I see. I actually see it as an interesting question. If a sociopathic mass murderer suddenly gains empathy, his personality goes through a huge shift, and he dedicates his life to helping others to atone, does he deserve forgiveness? Is he still the same person if his mind was artificially altered? It isn't necessarily black and white. This is making some assumptions of course, but that seems to be where this is going.

Chris

But we also found out that he was starting to develop emotions due to the nature of the tutorial

ALEXEI

She may have we don't know. But she also seemed more concerned with getting to the bottom of why or how Jake gave him PTSD than learning about what William did.

Brad

I think if she wanted to know more about William she should have talked to Jacob as he knows more about what William actually did. Jake does not know the full story of what William did if I remember correctly.

Yashakami

Nice

'qualified people to' -> 'qualified people to do'

Dominic Pernicone

PTSD from being killed due to being a mass-murdering psycopath who only views people as stepping stones... That's called consequences of his actions. William doesn't deserve a second chance, in the memory segments we even saw what a manipulative piece of shit he was to worm and squeeze his way into people's good graces. Kill on sight, anything less is a disservice to the story.

That would be one hell of an overreaction on Jake's part. Jake knows he has to have a tight grip on his emotions, with how he overreacted on Miranda's "betrayal", it'll probably prove fatal if he doesn't control his emotions, with his enemies using that against him.

SunderGoldmane

I was really expecting him to explode in bloodlust and get everyone’s reaction to him sharing some emotion through the barrier.

Dont_like_to_Talk

Thanks for the chapter

IJustWannaRead

Agree. Anyone who willingly mass murders innocents doesn’t deserve a pass even if they were mentally ill. I never want to condone people getting things like PTSD, but William deserves no sympathy. He instigated a war, slaughtered innocents, and had no remorse at all for his actions, simply thinking himself superior. If Jake doesn’t kill him on sight next time they meet it’s going to be very disappointing. Mental Illness can be a cause for an issue, but it in no way excuses an issue, especially when it’s a thing like mass murder.

Bunny Waffles

Well good. Honestly, anyone who seriously fought Jake absolutely should develop some sort of PTSD if they are annihilated as thoroughly as William was. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Brandon dixon

Yeah no, William is a mass murderer and a sociopath. Regardless of whatever mental health issue he has he doesn’t deserve any mercy and he doesn’t even deserve to live.

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter:-)

Vaccus

What a tease! Not giving us the conversation about William!

Arrogant Savant

You always beat me DO YOU EVEN READ IT FIRST!

Arrogant Savant
